I assume WHC is West Harbour City because if so, I really like that "wedding cake appearance" and think it is a great building but have read on that or other sites many people who absolutely deplore it.

I do agree with you that we are getting alot of glass in the city but I think SL will be standing somewhat on its own on University and I remain hopeful it will suprise pleasantly as it keeps going on the upside.

I guess if everyone agreed and liked 1 type of design, the whole city would be very monotone.

well in terms of the trump tower, I feel like we are getting architecturally duped compared to the trump tower in NYC and in Chicago (the latter looks like a giant middle finger but at least it is distinct).

I wish that Shangri-La could have used different building materials other than glass. I'm so tired of the glass facades. This is why WHC is my favourite new construction, it is completely different and distinct. this is just my opinion and preference. To me, the glass makes it feel soulless and devoid of character. I haven't seen the renderings for the top of this tower, but I hope they have a neat capping or point, or something.

Agreed that Trump looked dated already.

WRT glass condo towers, remember that the developers are catering to the buyers/residents. I think you're thinking of the building from the outside looking in - the developers are thinking of the buyers looking out. And to many buyers, that means sweeping views, column-free space and lots of daylight.

Interestingly, despite its dated facade (or maybe consistently with it), Trump has a more "traditional" window grid, with heavy concrete columns at regular spacing, you won't be seeing wall to wall floor to ceiling windows in Trump - and based on renders, etc. that's consistent with the traditional styling of the interiors (crown mouldings, drapes, etc.).

Some shots from today... apologies for the quality.
Work on the pool enclosure continues and it looks as though they may be getting ready to hang glass on the atrium/lobby portion. This building is absolutely massive from street level when you walk up University! ...probably in part because it's mostly unreflective, at least for the time being.

Oh geez. had to move my office from King Street West to Mississauga. dont know how long I will be there, but my daily trips down to Shangri la are over.

Looks like Shangri la is up around the 24th floor.

That sucks, your whole company moved ?

that does suck caltrane. at least you'll be seeing Absolute i guess :)
Loving the glass facade of shangri-la. this by no means is a typical box tower. the glass is almost as good as four seasons, though they're quite different actually.this tower's glass outshines the ritz like there's no tomorrow. i wonder how the glass will look once it is inhabited. with peoples white curtains show through?

Yes, my whole company. But I don't see myself working in the suburbs for any extended period of time. I'm a downtown guy.

So it's a wait and see situation.

When the weather is nice, for sure I could have seen myself spending at least an hour or so on Fridays or Thursdays taking pictures of the skyscrapers on University and Adelaide. This winter weather really put me into a funk, so much more brutal than last year. Good news is, only 3 more weeks till march, and the weather will improve greatly.

What company if you don't mind ? Or any idea of why ? Just curious what usually factors into relocation decisions - i.e. we're they maybe consolidating offices / cheaper rent ... so on.

Do you live downtown i.e. how to plan to commute there, it's funny you mention you don't see your self working there for long - I'm in a similar situation, my company didn't move to Markham they've always been there (well for the last 15+ years at least) anyway I sometimes have the same feeling but it's hard (in regards to wanting to work somewhere downtown).

In this image, you really can see the difference between the old (right) and new glazing (left) at TD Centre, an important project that's gotten scant attention on UT, possibly because it's so difficult to photograph. (Can't find the thread.)

My company is an APP developer. We also do content management for media and online computer training for Panasonic, Staples, The Brick, Future Shop etc etc. We moved because Microsoft offered us cheap digs in their former office space they were leasing on Matheson.

Sorry to hear, Cal and Tall...I'm also trying to escape the burbs, but it's true that it's much easier said than done... :(

Gotcha, yea that's a story I hear often ... I go on taxes quite bit but in all honesty this sort of thing must be expected to a certain degree i.e. rents will be cheaper in the suburbs no matter what at the end of the day.

I guess the take home message to me is - whenever you hear of these moves, it's always Mississauga or Markham it's never North York / Scarborough / ... that's the real issue I have.

Anyway, I hope your commute is OK ! Interestingly enough, where I work on Hi-way 7 east, it's pretty easy to get to from a more central location (i.e. Yonge and Eglinton). Actually, anywhere on Hi-way 7 easy is pretty reasonable. The reverse commuters on this stretch are mind boggling - I'd swear that more then 50% of all Viva users (purple / pink) on Hi-way 7 are coming from Toronto or the like.
