How could a 14km LRT cost $3.7B ($5.6B 30 yr. cost - $1B Prov. operating cost and $0.9B Municipal operating cost)?
That's $260M/km - for a transit line with 0 underground portions - and only a ~500m bridge over highway 403?
Maybe something went horribly wrong in the design?
 
I think the key point to take away from the article is this:

The province will select four "community representatives" who are not elected, and the city is "invited" to include an additional non-elected member of its choice.

So in other words, the province will select 4 staunch LRT opponents to negate the 1 pro city LRT proponent, and as a result the "task force" will come up with a solution that's far from Hamilton has ever asked for.

It's hard to do a serious assessment when the province refuses to release the math that went into their cost estimates.

I thought this too, but apparently Trudeau cant without sending all other cities more money, theres an equalization of sorts at the Federal level where each city gets a percentage towards transit capital costs based on population etc.

So sending Hamilton a billion would mean more for the entire country.

Which id be fine and dandy with lol, but im not sure thats in the budget...

I never said Ford was a genius. I just said that he was doing this to look better for the next election.

Hamilton, unfortunately, has been blowing hot and cold on the LRT, so it was fair for the contractors to be concerned about the municipal support. The mayor has proven himself weaker than John Tory. It didn't help that the provincial government isn't to be trusted either.
 
Looks more like the LRT won't be built this decade if the industry doesn't trust the governments.
 
If the rumour is true that lack of support from the city itself already concerned bidders, then they only have themselves to blame. Just another backward thinking city like Brampton. Hard to believe that these places torpedo large, once-in-a-generation transit investments that are handed to them on a platter. Wholesale stupidity.
 
^It's the city councillors who are the big problem in Hamilton. The suburban councillors couldnt care less for any kind of transit, let alone LRT. They bicker even about providing more bus service the rural areas of Hamilton.

It also doesn't help that Freddy is pretty much useless of the transit front in Hamilton. Although he himself supports the LRT, he has done little to get the project delivered in his 3 terms in office.

We got Mike Harris to thank for the amalgamation of the Regional Municipality of Hamilton–Wentworth. At least suburbs would understand transit. Rural areas? Bus service to X an Y's farms? Can cows be passengers?
