Toronto Eaton Centre

Somewhere between 50 and 60% of the stores are now closed.

Among the stores open yesterday that are closed today: Nordstrom, HBC, Roots, Victoria’s Secret, Zara.

Still open: the chocolate and pastry shops, Indigo, Starbucks, Hugo Boss, several phone kiosks, jewelry stores, the Drake store.

They had announced that they would be closing busy locations so that one doesn’t surprise me.

SportChek and Marks will be closed as of tomorrow until April 2nd for now.

Canadian Tire to have reduced hours going forward. 8am-6pm. No more paper CT money, and encouraging customers to not use cash.

The busiest mall in North America (temporarily) becomes a dead mall.
There's zero percent chance the Eaton Centre is the actual busiest mall in NA. Sure, they can say x amount of people visit it every year, but many, many of those people just happen to be passing through.

The entrances to the Eaton Centre are now blocked with Jersey barriers, with doors locked “due to COVID-19.”

This may be a violation of the city’s planning requirement for the Eaton Centre Its construction in the 1970s blocked off several east-west public access points.

At this point I doubt anyone is using it as everyone is off the streets as it is. The problem is that by keeping it open you need extra security as it will become a homeless shelter of sorts.

That being said, given the pandemic I can see why they would want to close it. The various states of emergency probably invalidate the planning requirements for the time being.
