Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

Mississauga riders shouldn't have to pay extra if they connect to the LRT just to go to the airport.

why not? its a separate service. There shouldnt be a flat fare for everything or else well never make any money off of this.
on that note what do you mean by connect to the lrt? from which point?

They just have to stay on and use the MiWay 7 Airport bus, without transferring. See link.

Since they built the Mississauga TransitWay to use buses and not a light rail vehicle you'd think that the MiWay 7 Airport bus would use it, except that their 7 bus doesn't use the TransitWay.

The "busway" in Mississauga was by far the greatest waste of transit money ($185,000,000) the province has ever seen. It starts at "nowhere" and goes to "nowhere". You'd think it would deliver people to either the airport or a subway line in west Toronto but you'd be wrong. It deposits people in the middle of nowhere.

And it will be followed by the second greatest waste of transit money - an LRT from somewhere in Brampton to south Mississauga. Who needs this?. If you drive in this city in rush hour, people are trying to get from Peel (Mississauga and Brampton) to Toronto and vice-versa. nobody is trying to get to Brampton from Mississauga or vice-versa.

Why aren't we building and extension to the Bloor subway to Square One? Certainly it would immediately benefit far more people than an extension to Vaughn. Politics?

Yes, exactly - so why on earth are they building this useless "Transitway"? Who will be served by this waste of funds?

Grade-separated Eglinton to SQ1 was (is) the way to go, not B-D.
From SQ1, Eglinton connects to:
  1. Spur to YYZ and FWLRT (Humber College)
  2. GO RER (UP) to downtown.
  3. Future DRL West to downtown
  4. Barrie GO (redundancy to downtown)
  5. Spadina subway to downtown and York U.
  6. Yonge subway to downtown or north
  7. DRL East to Seneca College or downtown redundancy.

Doesn't the Tansitway accomplish this already?

That's an interesting viewpoint. But:

a) Will it be fast enough to attract a lot of riders? Square One to Mt Dennis is about 14 km, at 30 kph that's 28 min. A trip from Square One to Union via Eglinton LRT plus RER will take about 50 min when the transfer time is taken into account. If the source and/or destination is not within walking distance from those points, the trip time will exceed 1 hour.

BD extension isn't much better in that respect, a slow milk-run from Square One to Bloor & Dundas. Only direct RER service between the Toronto and Mississauga downtowns would be truly fast.

b) If the Eglinton LRT extension is popular in Mississauga, then will the Etobicoke section have enough track capacity to handle the demand? Will the line have to be quad-tracked from Mt Dennis to Renforth Drive (where the Pearson service branches off)?

The Hurontario bus route is fairly busy. I don't know how many people want to travel between Mississauga and Brampton, but certainly there is a lot of demand for trips within Mississauga where most of the LRT track length will be located.

Do not forget that linking regional transport to local will create demand although you doubt the need.

Everyone is shaping their lives to minimize hassle and cost all the time. If something - like commuting down Hurontario - becomes easier - it can become a new popular norm very easily.

What is; is not necessarily what will be.

Service would be sq1 to Pearson alternating with sq1 to Toronto.
Yus is OK (barely) with 2 tracks - eglinton doest need more. B-D is similar travel time, but more costly ( harder to elevate).
Agree, some type of GO is needed for express.

Yonge trains have 2X the capacity of Eglinton trains, and Yonge has no branches. It has short-turns in the AM rush but those are easier to handle as the short-branch trains do not need to run on regular intervals.

Anyway, the idea of using Eglinton as a significant connection between Mississauga and Toronto has its merit. If the LRT tracks can be build into the Transitway while keeping it accessible for the buses as well, then the cost of Eglinton extension should indeed be much lower than the cost of Bloor subway extension.

The flow of downtown-bound commuters from the west shouldn't tax the Yonge Subway capacity (unlike the flow from the east). There will be two less busy lines, first SmartTrack and then Spadina subway, to intersept most of those commuters before they reach Yonge.

It might not be as flashy as a Subway but for the most part it will get the job done. I always wanted my first car to be a Ferrari. But then I realized that what mattered most was getting from point A to B. Ferraris are for people who have the money for them upfront or have no problem paying giant bills.
