Buildings like this should remind us in Toronto that, if we really bothered to put in the effort, we are just as capable of architectural excellence as other major cities. And it's up to all of us: if we the "clients" do not demand better from our developers, what incentive is there to stop them from putting up vulgarity after vulgarity? Until we shake off our culturally-ingrained parsimony, the likes of G + C will continue polluting the city visually.
 
Garbage condos still sell out. In general, Developer X isn't going to put in more effort until that changes.

“Garbage” condos sell because that is what people can afford (either owners or renters). Asking condo developers to build something like this building ignores the basic economic reality of the housing market. If CIBC Square was a condo building, how much do you think a 1br condo would have to be sold at - given that units in so called garbage buildings are selling for > 1million.

And that's exactly the problem. Many of us still see condos from a purely utilitarian perspective as "assets" and "investments", rather than "contributions to the urban community". Parsimony seems to be ingrained in the general mentality of Toronto, which has historically been a marginal, unimportant outpost of world affairs at best. Thankfully, there does seem to be a gradual shift lately, as certain developments have shown.
