Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

doady: I might be wrong, but I reading in one of the artciles about this competition that Ma's would actually be the tallest at 62 stories, which would technically go over the comeptitions height range. I don't remember which article it was (I think it was the national post).

I have to agree with you about Stein's. I haven't had a chance to take a peek at the display yet, but I saw a large-high quality image of it and it's actually an interesting building. The small image they posted on the competition website didn't do it justice and made it appear like a normal square slab, but when you actually get to see the detail you see an actual piece of architecture in there.

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

The final plans are currently being refined and 'costed'.

Apparently a couple of the designs will not be financially feasible to proceed with.

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

Proposals eliminated by a costing process would be the ones with a varying floorplate probably. Bye bye Rojkind, MWM, and MAD pehaps? :)

Rumour on SSC that the winner will be announced tomorrow, March 28...

Absolute Community picks winner of international design competition
TORONTO, March 22 /CNW/ - By mid-morning March 28 one team of architects
will be on top of the world - literally and figuratively.
Mississauga's Absolute Community will announce the winner of its
international design competition at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28 on top of the
CN Tower. In late January a panel of judges chose six entrants from a field
numbering in the hundreds and representing every continent except the
Antarctic.
There were two Canadian architects, two from the United Kingdom, one from
the United States and one from Mexico, all part of an international
competition to design Absolute's landmark condominium tower on the corner of
Hurontario Street and Burnhamthorpe Road.
They were given $25,000 and just over a month to deliver final
submissions. On March 28, Danny Salvatore from Fernbrook Homes, Sam Crignano
of Cityzen Developments, partners in the creation of Absolute, and Mississauga
Mayor Hazel McCallion will announce the overall winner.
The winner will be awarded the commission to design the 50-plus storey
tower, which will not only be the signature structure for the new community
but an instant icon marking the entryway to downtown Mississauga.

The finalists include:

- Gerald Stein, Zeidler Partnership, Canada
- Roland Rom Colthoff, Quadrangle Architects Ltd., Canada
- Michael Rojkind, Rojkind Arquitecos, Mexico
- Nicholas Boyarsky, Boyarsky Murphy Architects, United Kingdom
- Yansong Ma, MAD Office, USA
- Sebastian Messer, Studio MWM, United Kingdom

WHAT: Announcing the winner of the Absolute International Design
Competition
WHEN: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 28
WHERE: The top of the CN Tower - Horizons Café (Please go to Guest
Services and say that you are attending the Absolute Press
Conference)

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

So if they have carte-blanche to build a 50+ tower, does that mean others could build that tall or taller as well. What impediments are there to building tall in Miss.? Zoning? Economics?

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

^ Pearson Airport?

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

And the winner is ...... Zeidler

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

Zeidler tower will add some muscular appearance to Miss. Did they release a height?

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

Good for Mississauga.

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

No height has been released because...

the winner has not been announced yet. Not until tomorrow.

Billy is either predicting the winner, or has inside knowledge.

Billy - predict the height now.

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

I'm going put my money on Zeidler as well - should be a stunning addition to Mississauga's emerging skyline.

It's also nice to see that Zeidler also proposed a design for the 5th tower as well.

Re: Architects from 70 Countries bidding for Absolute Projec

Messer is the best one. Until I found out about the details in it (ie. proposed retail/office space/hollow centre/reflective mirros shooting light down centre) I always thought it looked stupid. It also will probably fit in the best. :D Also, it's proposed at 69 stories so it towers over all the rest.

I was hoping to get down there but I'm too poor to afford to go up the CN. :(

Mississauga's Big Day!

So if they have carte-blanche to build a 50+ tower, does that mean others could build that tall or taller as well. What impediments are there to building tall in Miss.? Zoning? Economics?

As mentioned on this board several times, Mississauga City Centre has no height limits. City Council basically told developers you can build anything you want and as tall as you like. As a result we have this massive condo boom which doesn't seem like it will end anytime soon.

The Airport is a non issues as the flight path is well north of the City Centre.

In terms of economics, I don't we will have any problems selling units. Just recently we completed a 30+ condo tower off Mississauga Road, which is like the Beverly Hills of Mississauga with hundreds of multi million dollar homes. The units were going from $400,000 to $1 million.

I'm excited about this announcement that will give Mississauga a Landmark Tower to be proud of. I will be at the press conference tomorrow morning.
