Toronto 2024 Olympic Bid (Dead)

In terms of venues that can be brought to the Portlands that would serve the community after the Games, an Olympic Stadium could become the new home of Toronto FC and Toronto Argos.

I still think the Blue Jays would be the better option.
 
I find all of this talk about revitalization and renewal quite inspiring, many great ideas! This is what an olympics can do for us, it stimulates vision and planning, which is often in far too short supply.

As for Metroman's post, the point is that a games will ensure the area is not entirely left to private development and condos with a few slivers of public land here and there. We may actually get a focal point waterfront here and not a boardwalk that passes for one. Riverdale believes that anything that isn't a condo is a 'bauble', but that's exactly the kind of thinking we need less of!

Bull. I think we should properly fund Lake Ontario Park w/ bridges, & a bridge to the islands (draw/swing bridge if necessary.) In no way shape or form do I think 'anything that isn't a condo is a bauble'. But it is the height of hypocrisy to say, as pro-Olympic shills like yourself do, that this spending is for anything but the orgasmic thrill you'll enjoy by having an Olympics in your home town.

I would grudgingly respect Olympics boosters if they would actually say, 'Screw it! Yes, we'll throw away billions, but it will be TONS of fun!' But you don't. You tell me fantasy stories about infrastructure and affordable housing. Feh. To Hades with you and the horse you rode in on.

If you really love this city, start lobbying for WT 2.0 and stop acting like your waste of the same dollars will somehow 'help' the city.

A letter has gone out to the Mayor of Buffalo to see if they have interest in joining TO's potential bid for 2024.
 
I want the "orgasmic thrill" of having the Olympics in my hometown. Also, that's fine if the DRL and Gardner burial aren't complete by 2024. Key components of both could projects could be in place. Probably better to use the smoke and mirrors tax incremental funding and do it over time anyway. I'm very serious about extending the Allen as an underground toll highway with added room for a DRL. The western half of DRL could be completed for 2024, running through Corso Italia, Bloor-Danforth line, Little Italy, Trinity Bellwoods, Spadina (overlapping with the new SmartTrac station), and Union. I also think SmartTrac should include a station in the Distillery District. That's a big missing piece. Then, develop above the train tracks. Bring on the 100 storey point towers. Those air rights are worth big bucks. Big property tax revenue.

Umm... you do realize that Allen Road already has a subway line, including through the part where the buried expressway was supposed to go?

Lord love a duck. If you know the layout of Boston and Chicago, you know that TO's orientation to the water is similar to Chicago's, and they did their waterfront right. There are even beaches right downtown with water you can swim in, like in Barcelona. If we didn’t have the wall of condos or the Gardner, Chicago would be a great model to follow. My point about Boston's burial of its expressway was that it reconnected key parts of the downtown. We won't get our Gardner buried as a stand alone project, but we might as part of a larger project. That was the 2008 Olympic bid plan. As for revenue streams, see my previous post about building over the train tracks and an underground toll route. Also, bring on the soulless starchitecture. Gotta love Gehry's 'jellybean' in Millennium Park.

Right here....you've found your proponent whose only argument for is that it'll be awesome. I enjoyed the Pan Am event being in town without having seen a single sporting event during that time...except, of course, the Reds. I can only imagine the Olympics would be even more fun. As a partial funder of government projects big and small, I aprove of my hard-earned social contribution going to throwing civic parties.

Besides, I wouldn't worry about the waterfront too much. It can't get worse than it already will be with that stupid raised highway running right up against it (it's embarrassing ). Just let WT run the show and it'll all be ok....except for that rubbish aforementioned highway.

What! No the Yonge-U-Spadina Line does NOT extend straight south from Eglinton West. It veers south-east at that point. The 'Stop the Xpressway' movement prevented the continuation of the Allen downtown. The continuation of the Allen downtown at grade level would've ruined the downtown fabric. The subway runs down the middle of the Allen and veers east off of it at Eglinton. I propose continuing the Allen underground as a toll highway with a subway down the middle of it. Charge a fortune for the tolls. The highway would be in could company with the 407, the world's most expensive toll highway. Who cares what we charge? The highway is a new route that would only reduce north-south traffic on existing routes. Let the Muskoka set pay for it. It would largely be used regularly by people with no time on their hands and plenty of money or for the rare trip in/out of the city at rush hour for the rest of us shlubs. The tolls would pay for the tunneling for the subway. Presto, you have half of your DRL running from Eglinton West to Union. Also, thanks for the Kapoor correction. Still a great piece though. Gehry designed the nearby Jay Pritzker Pavillion, an outdoor performance space.

The subway follows the intended route of the Spadina Expressway, which in various plans was to either be on the surface in the ravine or buried with the subway, emerging at street level under Casa Loma. There was never a plan to run the Allen straight South, in part because there isn't anywhere to put a large enough tunnel.
