Re: the Imperial Pub closing, that's disappointing, if not unforeseen. Had some fun times in the Library during grad school.

I usually do not like to be negative with projects, but I do not know why they couldn’t incorporate the bar in the new development on the main floor and the design not that great for the location so close of Dundas Square. Something much better could have used the space. Very disappointing!

...I'm not sure sandwiching a residential tower between an office block look will ever do the memories here justice. More likely an insult in the least. >.<

I've only been to the Imperial Pub once but alas it was memorable. Dives will always have a place in my heart among fallen Toronto retail.
I'll go for my first time in a few days - I'm not a huge bar fly due to the cost of living these days.

Ok, so I'm the only one who finds the idea of @AlbertC slumming it in a dive bar shocking?

Really? LOL

I mean @Towered sure.................... but not Albert......

I drink out less nowadays but I'm a dive guy. Green Room, Red Room, Java House, Pour Boy, the Rhino, Imperial Pub, I've been to them all. :)

Some great dives on your list! I'm so sad to scratch yet another dive bar off my list. I loved the Imperial! Had some great times there. I first went there about 20 years ago. i was hanging out with a friend who was transgender. Back in those days, there wasn't many bars outside the village, for young gay or trans people to hang out at. Hard Rock was out of the question, most the other bars in the area were either loud sports bars or full of Bay street suits. We felt comfortable hanging out in the Library at the pub. The atmosphere was so cozy and chill. And the outside patio upstairs was a hidden gem. In recent summers. i would grab a drink and just sit there and watch the craziness of Dundas Square. That was my entertainment.

I'm sure the ground level of the new building will be something crappy. Maybe a another corporate drug store, bank or dentist office or Horton's. And the windows will be covered in window film. It wouldn't be sankofa square without window film!

"Dives"...

Alfies, Jankies, Bass Line, Gucci's, Lion's Den, The Irish Rose, etc. etc. etc.

I love you, Albert, but you can't just throw that term around and list a couple of U of T bars as 'dives'. I'm not even getting into things like the oft-violent rivalry between Churrasqueira Martins and Canecas. If you're 'comfortable' somewhere, it ain't a dive, brother.

Sigh, look at this real wood window! Such character. Wish they could have found a way to keep the Imperial within the new development.
