The Plague of EIFS

I had a nice window seat as I was riding the Bathurst streetcar today. It didn't last long. While waiting at a red light, the monstrosity that I saw outside caused me jump off the streetcar to see if this was seriously for real, or if my eyes were lying to me. I honestly have no words.

This is too ugly even for the suburbs. But it's not in the suburbs, which is why I find it so insulting. This development is completely out of tough with the architecture and build form of the neighbourhood.

While it is out of touch with the architecture of the neighbourhood, I think the biggest crime in these pictures is the blue bay and gable house. That truly is insulting. As for the faux-baroque townhouses, call me crazy but it's not even close to some of the examples posted in this thread. The worst offenders are renovations where ranch style bungalows or victorians are covered in something that clashes so much. These, for what they are, are out of place and out of historical context but I can't seem to share your outrage and shock. Seeing the three blocks in succession sort of works, and the interior walkway actually doesn't seem half bad as well as the flush walls. There's some more symmetry and order here than your Bayview and Sheppard example from the previous page. I'm not saying I like it, I just don't think its the worst offender.

Yeah, for some reason I've always found that Bathurst case outrageous more in the "campy" sense than in the simple "aesthetic crime" sense...
