Bombardier to cut 1,600 jobs in move to reduce costs and consolidate work

February 11, 2021

Bombardier Inc. said Thursday it will reduce its overall workforce by about 1,600 jobs as it moves to cut costs.

The company said it is making the cuts as it consolidates its Global aircraft completion work in Montreal and reviews options for underutilized hangar and industrial space at its Quebec facilities.

"Workforce reductions are always very difficult, and we regret seeing talented and dedicated employees leave the company for any reason," Bombardier chief executive Eric Martel said in a statement.

"But these reductions are absolutely necessary for us to rebuild our company while we continue to navigate through the pandemic."

Bombardier also said it will end production of Learjet aircraft later this year, allowing it to focus on its more profitable Challenger and Global aircraft families.

After stating "it is making the cuts as it consolidates its Global aircraft completion work in Montreal", the article does later add "Bombardier will use the proceeds to finance a portion of its new facility at Toronto Pearson International Airport". There have been bulldozers, etc., pushing dirt around at the Pearson Airport site for several months, though the last time I saw it back in November it still looked like it would be a long time before any new facility would be built and finished.
And after De Havilland Canada/Longview Aviation said some time ago that they would build a new facility somewhere in Ontario to be ready for 2023 when they must leave Downsview, there now seems to be some doubt about the future of the turboprop Q400.
Industry observers say De Havilland needs to grow its order back-log, so it can justify the investment in a new assembly line elsewhere.

Bombardier to spend US$400-million on new Mississauga plant

Nov 2, 2021

Bombardier Inc.

will invest US$400-million in a new Mississauga manufacturing plant that is set to open in 2023, chief executive officer Eric Martel announced on Tuesday.

The company, which is focused solely on building business jets after selling off its commercial airplane and train-making divisions in 2020, will move the 2,000 employees who work at its Downsview facility in Toronto to the new Mississauga facility at Pearson International Airport, where the company will build its Global line of jets, including its flagship Global 7500 plane.

Bombardier said the new facility will cut greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption by more than half compared with the Downsview facility, which was built in the 1960s. The lease on the 770,000-square-foot Mississauga property ends in 2056.

Mr. Martel told The Globe and Mail that the company considered building the new facility in other locations where they have a presence, such as Quebec or in Wichita, Kan., but opted to stay in the Toronto area because it has a good relationship with its work force, which is represented by the Unifor trade union.

Bombardier previews new manufacturing centre project at Pearson airport

Nov 15, 2021

MISSISSAUGA, ONT.—Bombardier recently provided a preview of construction of its new manufacturing centre at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ont. where final assembly of its family of Global business jets, including the Global 7500 aircraft, will take place.

Ledcor will be building the new facility which is on track for completion in 2023. The centre will provide a new home to the Global Manufacturing Centre, which is currently located in Downsview, states a release, adding the move, which represents a private investment by Bombardier of about US$400 million, will provide continued employment to the 2,000 employees currently working at the Downsview facility.

The Downsview plant was built in the 1960s and the transition to the 770,000 square foot facility at Pearson will reduce Bombardier’s industrial and environmental footprint in the area.

Energy consumption will be reduced by just under 60 per cent by focusing on natural and more efficient lighting elements. Newer heating methods and updated processing systems will lower greenhouse gas emissions by more than half, the release adds.

It’s also anticipated that less water will be used in the manufacturing process thanks to the modifications implemented in the processing shop workflow. Electric vehicles will be favoured for onsite transportation and three Sustainable Aviation Fuel tanks will provide fuel for departing aircraft.

“Ledcor is proud to be building Bombardier’s new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Toronto Pearson International Airport,” said Ray Lawrence, vice-president, Ontario with Ledcor Construction in a statement. “We are excited to work with the project and design team to achieve Bombardier’s sustainability and energy efficiency targets.”
