I would like to see the giant support columns (if they are going to be part of the final design) contain anchor points for the street car cables. Then most of the poles can be removed. Look at the current picture - there are two poles six inches apart on the Victoria side of the corner.
Then, I would like to see anchor points become standard for all new construction along street car lines where the sidewalks are narrow enough and the buildings are close enough to the street. Start getting rid of the poles. Older buildings can have the points added later.
 
Did anyone else notice that the "icebergs" (and the chillers) in the parking lot have recently been moved away (to the roof?). See Posting #8 above for photo of them. At the moment this has allowed St Mike's to extend this car park but it appears to be a sign that they are trying to 'clear the decks' for this project.

Ontario will expand and renovate Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital to give families better access to high-quality care, and create hundreds of local jobs.

Planning is underway for the renovation and construction project that includes:
■ A new 17 floor state-of-the-art Patient Care Tower that will house: ■new patient care space for cancer treatment
■intensive and critical care units, and surgical suites
■diagnostic services, such as CT Scans
■110 in-patient care beds;

■Renovations to the Bond and Queen wings to accommodate outpatient care clinics, an expanded emergency department and nutrition clinic; and
■Renovations to accommodate a new satellite dialysis unit.


In addition to improving care for families, the project will also spur the local economy, creating up to 850 jobs on site during construction.

St Mike's says that it could be completed by late 2016. It's likely to early to rely on that date yet though, but that's what we are going with in the aforementioned dataBase entry for the time being.

The thickness of the outer skin shown, and square windows, it looks like D&S might be aiming at masonry or precast for the exterior. It would be interesting if they're looking at another material though - like white or fritted glass, or metal.
 
Final decisions have not been made on that actually. The renderings are the D+S plan, which was selected as the concept for the site, but they have not been signed on to do the detail work/working drawings yet. We will keep you posted!

Hospital projects under the axe in Ontario’s austerity-themed budget

Ontario’s government will backtrack on planned construction of new hospitals and upgrades to existing ones just months after Premier Dalton McGuinty promised them during a series of showy pre-election announcements...
 
Apart from being a massive socio-political disappointment, I guess we'll be stuck with this blight of a street corner for the foreseeable future.
 
That's a shame if they shelve this project - but not unexpected considering the economy and the huge deficit and debt.
 
Well, it doesn't look like this project is cancelled - there are only 4 projects that was cut according to the budget:

Capital Restraint Measures

Reducing hospital investments, including cancelling four previously announced major hospital projects and rescoping two others, will result in reduced borrowing of $570 million. The government will continue its investments in more than 30 new major hospital projects, in addition to the 25 major projects currently under construction.

Previously announced major hospital projects to be cancelled are West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Redevelopment; Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre — Replace Hemodialysis Unit; South Bruce Grey Health Centre (Kincardine) — Emergency and Ambulatory Project; and Wingham and District Hospital — Phase 1 Ambulatory and Inpatient Project.

Three of the four projects above are rural hospital projects (in Conservative ridings). Other projects in the pipeline still going ahead, presumably, include the old Peel Memorial Hospital site (demolition is already underway) the planned Milton hospital expansion (badly needed) and the Vaughan hospital.
