St Lawrence Market

Bluestone had some sort of leak and opened a popup elesewhere in the hotel. I wish them ill, since their owner is a major Trump fundraiser.
They appear to now be back in business and open at the old location.

Across the street(ish) we still await "Pita Lite" which has been "coming soon" for since I think at least July. Pretty odd for a location in a commercial office property to be sitting vacant for that long only renovating from one fast food franchise into another.

I recall that Fit For Life, the previous occupant, and another extremely out-of-date francise, took an inexplicably long time to open as well. It felt like it was open for business for LESS TIME than it took just gearing up to open, but that might just be my perception.

"Leased" sticker slapped on the sign where Hiro Sushi used to be. Now let's see how long it takes for whatever it is to actually open.

Savoia on King St East (just opposite St James Park) is all emptied out - not clear if they have closed or are doing a refresh but the showroom is still listed on their website. No signage on door to explain so I guess that we shall see.....

St. Lawrence Market's operating hours changing this March

Hours of operation at the City of Toronto's St. Lawrence Market South (the main building) will change for a one-year pilot project starting March 15, 2020. Plans for the pilot project are the result of a recent review of the market's hours that involved consultations with stakeholders, market merchants and the general public. The goal is to optimize the market's operating hours.

The new hours of operation – which include having the market open Sundays and four evenings each week – will be tested from March 15, 2020 to March 15, 2021 to make sure the new hours best serve market merchants, the market community, Toronto residents and visitors to the city. The pilot project will inform a decision on a more permanent operating schedule for 2021 and beyond.

Operating hours under the pilot project (effective March 15, 2020):
Open
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Closed
Mondays

Some holiday dates will vary during the pilot project. 2020 holiday hours will be posted on http://www.stlawrencemarket.com/ by the end of January. The St. Lawrence Market Saturday Farmers Market will continue to operate with existing hours every Saturday year-round from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The South Market currently operates Tuesdays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's closed Sundays and Mondays. The pilot's revised hours of operation are an effort to make the market more accessible, with service hours that meet visitors' changing needs and preferences.

More information about the St. Lawrence Market Hours of Operation Pilot Project is available at http://www.stlawrencemarket.com/ and by email at stlawrencemarket@toronto.ca.

Wonderful - their current hours suck. 6 pm on weekdays is not late enough for all the 9-5 office workers downtown, and not opening at all on Sundays was just stupid all around.

Much improved convenience!

Every time I pass by on Sunday mornings in the summer there are inevitably some befuddled tourists out front wondering what is going on and why it is closed. The amount of business they have turned away is extraordinary. The 10:00 a.m. Sunday open is probably still an hour too late, especially in the summer when people want to get out and about before the afternoon heat.

Good! But... this took about a generation too long. I get it that it is hard for mom and pop stands to make the transition, but equivalent markets globally have done this for eons, so I've never quite understood the resistance here.

I wonder how the changes in operating hours will overlap with the lower level renovation.

AFAIK, there is no connection - the changes on the lower level are still not funded. That said, if the Market attracts more people with the longer hours there will be more pressure to 'get on with it'. This is in the minutes of tye Market Precinct Advisory Committee for June 2029:

"Finalizing the design phase of this project, which is 90% complete. The business case needs to be reviewed to determine viability to the project alongside the North Market Project. The review will take approximately 2-6 months. The outcome will be communicated to Stakeholders/ St. Lawrence Market Precinct Advisory Committee later this summer. No changes are anticipated with regards to this project for 2019. " See: https://www.toronto.ca/services-pay...-lawrence-market-precinct-advisory-committee/

UPDATE: The City's 2020 budget notes an allocation of $4M for renovations to South Market in 2021. https://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2020/bu/bgrd/backgroundfile-141411.pdf

It's important to note that this is a 1 year pilot project to gauge merchant and consumer response. Needless to say, there has been lots of pushback from some of the merchants, so if the change in hours is something that you support, make sure to spread the word and shop as often as possible at the market. A key factor will be to see if overall sales increase and to make sure that the same volume of sales is not just spread out over more hours.

Good points but I understand that the merchants are fairly evenly split between those wanting things (hours) to stay the same and those wanting to try something new.
