Worst of all it looks like they destroyed the detailing around the windows and doors instead of simply covering them. That is, based on the shape and size of the new frames.

Seems like this one is never coming back. A tear-down now.

And the local councillor is the useless, forgettable Ford brown noser Cesar Palacio - who seems in many ways precisely the right kind of guy to represent streetcar-hating, EIFS-lovin' Corso Italia.

In this case, Councillor McConnell tried to get the building listed (see post #97), but was stonewalled by Heritage Preservation Services. Is it not time to have a fundamental relook at how heritage is handled in this city, and get Heritage Toronto back into the process? The current system clearly does not work.

Such a beautiful transformation! Its a shame that more developers don't fix up their historic buildings this way. The texture, colour, and the detail around the windows make this project a real winner!

Kudos to Motel 6 for taking initiative!

I agree. They should have put up a smaller replica of the CN Tower as well (or of the Eiffel Tower, for those of international tastes and preferences), perhaps perched up on the roof, as the cherry on top of their artistic vision.

The site is in the heart of the proposed expansion area of the Cabbagetown Heritage Conservation District (http://www.cabbagetownhcd.ca/southwest.html). Will Preservation Services weigh in on the proposed plans or will this be another example post-mortem (if the renovation goes badly) of how under-staffed they are?

Oh, who am I kidding? Heritage preservation is becoming more and more of a joke nowadays; wishful thinking really. I actually think we hit a peak and are reverting to the mindset of 1960s Toronto.
