Rosewood (Eglinton & DVP, Greenpark, 22 + 26s, Burka) COMPLETE

Not very special architecturally, but I do like the new effort at intensification in the area. If there are more towers going up in the area, and with the addition of the Aga Khan Centre, the Wynford Drive area would be more than just an employment centre, but more like a "city centre" on the lines of Scarborough Centre.

Yuck.

The top few floors look like such a mishmash of random volumes and stylistic touches.

Around 27 stories, blah-chitecture, should blend into the urban forest.

Hooray for densification.

Could it be this proposal from last year? If so, then the proposed design is actually an improvement on the drawings with the preliminary application, believe it or not.

The first phase was just released.

This is the first high-rise project by Greenpark Homes - which is for those of you that don't know one of the largest home builders in Canada (They've built over 13,000 homes in the last decade and over 48,000 in the past 39 years - by comparison Tridel has built about 12,000 condos in the last decade).

The first phase is 25s with 207 units. Sales have been very strong and occupancy is for June 2009.

The project is surrounded by 2.5 acres of landscaped grounds with a valley and forest to the south. Most suites are large (2 bedrooms or more)

Surrounded by landscaped grounds? Would this then be another "towers in the gated park" that seem to remain popular in the 'burbs?

The architecture is, IMO, meh.

The project is on the edge of a ravine with protected forests - not every condo is located in an urban context that should result in the highest standards of 'urban' form.

It isn't exactly a spectacular project (given the location that isn't surprising), but it is a first for one of, if not Canada's largest builder and I don't think anything other than a tower in the park would be appropriate.

As for suburban residential intensification - that blue Tridel project is also in the immediate area.

Funny how few people are calling this to task on "unworthy of Don Mills" grounds. Funny, too, the lack of "Clewes Modern" up in these parts.

Why are those in charge of embellishing the environs of Don Mills so prone to fighting what made Don Mills, Don Mills? Do something in the Parkin spirit, not in the (wannabe) Lutyens spirit...)

(Note: Aga Khan is an inherent exception, even if their proposal paradoxically involves the destruction of Parkin--but hey, devil's advocate for the sake of argument...)
