Rob Ford's Toronto

It looks worse on Toronto Police than it does on the OPP.

Does it? To any reasonable person Ford is guilty of everything he's been accused of, and the evidence already released in the ITOs seems to back everything up. If I was a juror and his case was in front of me I'd have no trouble finding him guilty beyond reasonable doubt. If this was about anyone other than Ford, he would have been brought in a loooong time ago. If the TPS feel like they're being held to an unreasonable standard of evidence here, I'd be inclined to agree with them.

We're not talking here about Machiavelliaian masterminds a la Lex Luthor or Professor Moriarty; they're simply a pair of low level brutes. Two stupid, mean, utterly transparent, self-serving thugs. How have they managed to get away with everything?

I'm guessing here, but the fact that Doug sold Hashish in the 80's isn't really all that important. Its that he remembers who he sold it to! 20 years later, some of those people may be in positions of power.

Is this damage control now?

The OPP said its veteran officer assigned to the case, Detective-Inspector Chris Nicholas, determined that there is “no further role” for the force, said a spokesman for the force, Sergeant Pierre Chamberland

“Everything that was there when we were called in was already before the courts in some way, shape or form, so therefore there was nothing for us to do and there was no new information,” Sgt. Chamberland said. “If anything new does come forward, and we’re requested, then we’ll look at it.”

Toronto Police maintain that the investigation into the mayor, dubbed Project Brazen 2, is ongoing and the lead investigator, Detective Sergeant Gary Giroux, expressed bafflement about the OPP’s remarks.

“Our investigation is still ongoing and so the comment about the withdrawal is confusing to me because it’s a bit of a disconnect,” he said in an interview. “I certainly haven’t heard that they’re no longer engaged.”

Finally catching up on everything. I'm in shock. How could the OPP come to that conclusion so quickly??? So much for "without fear and without favour".

What's great about this is, as of now, the Ontario Liberals are higher up on the Criminal Scale than the Mayor according to the OPP lol.

This is interesting. If we take away the "imminent arrest" rumours, it seems Giroux was caught off guard. Of course the investigation was on going because Ford hadnt been charged.

@globeandmail: Rob Ford "cleared"? Not so fast, say Toronto police: updated story http://t.co/Qmwf5WgigR #TOpoli http://t.co/xvy9d12EMT

Just finished reading this as well. It's very encouraging and pretty much what I posted a page back (or at least I was trying to say this). Gives me hope that there are still charges coming.

Asked if the mayor “knows a few dirty cops,” as is claimed in a conversation picked up on police wiretaps, he [Doug Ford] said, “No, not at all.”

Phew. Well, that puts that to rest at least.

I think this is one of the "sources say" off-the-record situations. But I see no reason to doubt it.

I suspect he is not reporting a fact but, rather, he is assuming that the OPP decision not to lay any additional charges now must have been made after consulting the Crown, given that, if the police lay a charge without consulting the Crown, the Crown can step in and stay (kill) it. However, it is also possible that the OPP so decided without consulting the Crown (after all, if the police do not lay a cherge there is nothing for the Crown to stay). It is also possible that the OPP consulted the Crown and were told by the Crown that it did not wish to be the ham in a sandwich between the OPP and the TPS, such that if the OPP does not think that any new charges are warranted at the moment they can take responsibility for that decision and not try to get the Crown to add an imprimatur to it.

It seems the charge everyone is talking about is extortion. Experts are saying that it's highly unlikely that Ford will be charged. In general or just with the extortion charge? For all we know, and there have been hints, there might be other charges the cops are working on, hence TPS saying investigation is still ongoing.

What the hell is the OPP doing then?

Giroux didn't even know about OPP withdrawal, yet they are going to the media?
