Rob Ford's Toronto

It will be interesting to find out if, indeed, there was an "urgent matter" or if the Mayor was just afraid to face the Toronto Arts community.

RF doesn't seem to see any 'value' in the arts so highly unlikely he'll attend these events.

Well, you're right, he's a real idiot, and most people who post to this thread knew that before the election, yet a majority of the suburban voters put him in power.

How dare those God Damn suburban yokels voting. Don't they understand how insignificant their opinions are as opposed to their downtown cousins who are so much cleverer. Do they think they are citizens just because they pay tax?

Being mayor means you have to put your personal interests and opinions aside. One of the many problems with our mayor, is that he can't grasp what being a mayor is.

I don't think the problem is rooted in that he doesn't "value" the arts...it's that he is intimidated.

Isn't it obvious that our mayor suffers from some serious form of personality disorder?

I think he's just representing - what he believes - is the staunch, anti-downtown sentiment found in the outer 416. In his eyes, he's leading the "suburbs" and their 1950s suburban American values: house, car, wife, kids, football etc. He's mimicking Denis Leary's video for 'Asshole'. He doesn't want to put anything aside for issues like arts or social welfare, because suburban home-owning taxpayers are enough to support him.

Unfortunately for him, Toronto has a diminishing middle class. This is especially apparent in areas like his former ward. People use buses for more than 'getting to the slots'.

As others have pointed out before, for a man who was supposedly elected to represent suburban interests, he has sure spent a lot of his time focusing on the dt core. Is he representing the suburbs or is he representing a suburban grudge against downtowners?

It would have been interesting to see how Mayor Ford was received by the Arts community at the Mayor's Arts Awards Lunch, but TIFF's Cameron Bailey has tweeted that "Mayor Ford sends his regrets..."

Edit to add:
NOW's Glen Sumi had tweeted "Heading to Mayor's Arts Awards lunch. Will the mayor show up? And how many mins b4 first @margaretatwood joke?!" only to later tweet the predictable truth ""The mayor had hoped to be here today.. but had to attend to an urgent matter" - yup, true folks. Huge moan after that."

The urgent matter was to coach a football game.

Suburban home-owning taxpayers visit art galleries, museums, theatres, the symphony, the opera and all sorts of cultural events. I meet them all the time, downtown.

Unbeknownst to him, he's representing neither. The notion of the "suburbs" does not exist in Toronto like it does in the US. The 'suburbs' here are predominantly where the poor live. Amongst the middle income earners with homes and driveways are large swaths of low income residents in apartment blocks. Since the 1970s, this is steadily becoming more and more apparent.

Ford is not representing the 'suburbs' in a socio-geographic sense. He's representing homeowners/taxpayers/vehicle owners within the outer 416.

Apparently, Ford is now claiming that he has reduced the police budget, despite the fact that the proposed 2012 budget is $5.9 million higher than 2011.

By the same logic, the new privatized garbage deal (which supposedly will save $11 million - even if you believe the contractor's fishy claims) will actually lose taxpayers $29 million a year, since Ford originally promised $40 million in savings.

Meanwhile, Ford still touts the $774 deficit, which we now know ignores reliable sources of income such as parking fees. It is like Rob Ford basing his household budget solely on his councillor's salary, while ignoring investment income from Deco Labels, since he can't know for sure what the exact figure will be.

What's worse, when the City learned that the Land Transfer Tax will, once again, bring in more revenue than the overly conservative forecasts, Mike Del Grande said this is "one-time money" and can't be used for balancing the budget. And then, practically in the same breath, he said the City can and should sell City assets -- one-time money by any conceivable definition -- to balance the budget. Madness!

I could live with honest fiscal conservatism, but the deception and ideological blinkers need to stop.

Then again, Rob Ford says the taxpayers in Toronto love him. Just as "The Libyan people love Gaddafi" as said by Gaddafi. Look what happened to him by those who love him.

Hahaha..the difference is that Rob doesnt have a penny to rub to help the people that love or hate him .... Mr. Gaddafi had trillions of dollars that he embezzled, simillar to what David Miller did, with of course a much smaller amount.:D

I have to say that the ignorance that comes out of your mouth is beyond incredible.
Are you seriously comparing Miller to Gadhafi?
