Rob Ford's Toronto

The CNN piece is the most disparaging to Ford that I've yet seen in the American Media.

Doug reminds us of that time every paper called his brother "The White Obama!" Wait...what?

I thought it was a lie, but it turns out it was just an exagerration. It was one paper, and they never said "White Obama": http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com...iriddin-rob-ford-the-barack-obama-of-toronto/

A social liberal who thinks only the gays have AIDS, makes up fake stories to avoid Pride, is incensed at the thought of insulting his ward with a homeless shelter, etc, etc.

But his improvisational public relations style takes a bizarre turn when a longtime resident of Queen's Plate wanders over, eyes wide under the brim of a Red Sox cap.

His name is Ken and he begins to complain -- about building management, the rough tactics of police and the Fords who are "all in on it."

Doug's smile tightens, and in a friendly way, he urges the man to step outside. Ken doesn't want to.

As Ford's police detail starts to intervene, Ken shouts, "I remember when you used to sell hash to all my friends."

"I just had enough. I was sick and tired of all these allegations and all this bulls**t — excuse my word —a nd that's all that is. Sorry kids, I shouldn't have sworn in front of the kids."

The gaffes and apologies are now flowing in real time and as he gets more agitated by my questions, his brother tries to intervene.

"These guys aren't too bad, Rob," Doug says, but the mayor waves him off. "It's typical media. You guys are the same, you're all cut from the same cloth."

I wonder if the Ford's cancelled the AC interview once they finally realized that ACs people were laughing at them, not with them. I wonder how long it takes them to realize this is case for all of the American media.

Hoo boy. What I said was, it's "quite possible" that Ford will win another term as Mayor. It is. The rest you came up with on your own.

And what I'm saying is that the events of the past 2-3 weeks have effectively pushed the ledger from "quite possible" to "quite impossible".

At this point, those who still insist otherwise are deamalgamationist milquetoasts.

I doubt it's that. IME people with Asperger's can be socially awkward and very focused on the things they find interesting, to the exclusion of other things, but they aren't aggressive or mean or stupid.

My vote's for narcissistic/antisocial personality disorder, alcoholism, plus some kind of intellectual disability. Maybe even foetal alcohol effect?

Don't forget football-related head injury.

You as well?

OK....I have to ask how old you guys are.
It could be my age (28) or the subculture I'm in.

Interesting.

LOL I can't believe I'm seeing a discussion on the word 'ratchet' on UrbanToronto, where people are sometimes too modest to not blank-out words like 'p***y'.

I'm 24, and this word has been used for a while, so let me explain:

"Ratchet" = disgusting/'skanky'/easy, usually referring to women
e.g. "She's dressed so ratchet" = She's dressed like a low-class prostitute.
"That's some ratchet pussy." = That woman is disgusting because she appears to be low-class and highly promiscuous.

You can think of it as the word "gross" specifically with respect to sex. Basically it just means low-class promiscuous ('ghetto') woman, but slang is flexible.

It's also a device consisting of a bar or wheel with angled teeth that are engaged by a cog, allowing movement in one direction only. ;-)

And what I'm saying is that the events of the past 2-3 weeks have effectively pushed the ledger from "quite possible" to "quite impossible".

At this point, those who still insist otherwise are deamalgamationist milquetoasts.

It's funny that you say that it's impossible for Ford to get re-elected given all the posts just since yesterday showing that he still has lots of support.

Clearly you have your finger on the pulse of Toronto politics.

I'd also like to hear how the protein shakes help his weight loss -- IIRC, you drink them to build muscle mass more quickly while weightlifting. That would, you know, mean they're full of calories and increase his weight. Man's a walking disinformation officer… ;-)
Protein is harder to break down and so increases metabolic rates.

Funny, I don't remember that headline:

"Everyone keeps saying Rob's a conservative," Doug explains. "He's a HUGE, MASSIVE social liberal. He LOVES Obama. The headlines of the papers when he won? 'The White Obama.'"

http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/18/world/weir-reporters-notebook/index.html

Anecdotally, I know a Ford supporter (grew up in Malvern, now lives downtown) who, at the time the crack scandal broke, believed:
- All allegations against Ford were part of a media conspiracy
- Any criticism of Obama (however valid) was also part of a media conspiracy

Just my uninformed opinion, but I think Doug is trying to pander to certain (slightly gullible) elements of "Ford Nation". If I didn't know better, I would find it hard to believe anybody would fall for this stuff.

Seriously, the definition I provided is the only way I've ever heard the term being used.

My God, I must live in a bubble! ;)

Just wondering .... I noticed that at the Argos game yesterday Ford has his two favourite security/driver/bodyguard dudes with him and possibly a third one. Is this on my taxpaying dime? He wasn't there in an official capacity so I certainly hope he was paying those guys out of his own pocket.

The Globe & Mail has up on its site an extended video of Mayor Ford departing the Rogers Centre which captures just how crazy a scene it was!

In the history of Canada has a politician ever been mobbed by fans to this degree? I don't think we saw this at the height of Trudeau-mania.

I would like to know a) how many of these people are residents of the GTA and can vote for Rob Ford and b) how many are there for the ironic hilarity of it all.

On the first point, most people outside the City of Toronto love Rob Ford because they associate him with rural conservative politics and a hatred of downtown socialism. Most, I'm willing to wager, don't know too much about the ins and outs of his depravity (anyone cheering for a repeated drunk driver who was putting the lives of TO families at risk is just a POS scumbag). If they do know these things and they still cheer for him, they are just horrible human beings. And there is no shortage of those...
