Good observation. Kinsella is custom fit for that job. Olivia herself will stay out of it I think. She won't have to get dirty but we all know that Olivia's no pushover so she will have no issue pulling out all the punches on Ford in the final weeks when the prime time televised debates air. I sincerely hope that the moderator is somebody in the vain of Steve Paikin who will call Ford out on his inaccurate claims and insist on specifics and clarification. If someone like Stephen LeDrew is a moderator, I'm gonna lose it.
I'm trying to remember the debates I went to last time. I recall Ford being quiet most of the time, rolling his eyes when addressed by another candidate but never speaking unless he was specifically asked a question by the moderator and then still only repeating the same tired slogans without offering any substance. It worked at the time but I wonder how he'll get away with it when confronted with facts on a 4 year record that he has to wear. I'm afraid that perhaps he'll lie and claim that what the other candidates and even the moderator are saying is false.
This election is going to be both very entertaining but also terrifyingly nail biting. Despite what the polls show, there's a real chance that the opposing campaigns can trip up. Adam Giambrone's brilliantly prepared campaign was unexpectedly aborted before it could shine and its substitute never managed to right itself up. I can't fathom the prospect of Ford being Mayor for another four years. Even if he's criminally charged sometime soon, his trial could be stalled by procedural tricks and wouldn't be held until after the election, and it would be some time before it wrapped up and he'd be sentenced -- worse, it may not even come with enough jail time to boot him out of office. Ford could turn out to be the Smitherman of the Conservatives. If Tory and Stintz stay out or if they don't gather enough momentum, then there may be a lot of Conservatives who will have no choice but to hold their nose and vote for Ford if the only option is a left of centre candidate -- Olivia Chow.
If the citizens of Toronto elect Ford again after all this, it's going to be hard not give up on this city and take the opportunity to move abroad for 4 or 5 years. The sad things is, I've lost a lot of faith in Torontonias to do the right thing.
