Not gonna happen with John Tory.
Duh -- he might not be around anymore -- the teardown is probably the 2030s or beyond. The existing structure can be refurbished/nursed till then. By then, we'll have 7 SmartTrack-style routes. (GO RER)

Otherwise, we'll decide to build the tunnel. Our Big Dig.

Tory still around in the 2030s?

Hmmmm..............

Mayor Drapeau *did* reign Montreal from 1960 through 1982.

And New York City Mayor Bloomberg lasted for 12 years, a Republician in a Democrat city.

UPX, Vaughan Subway Extension, Union Reno Complete, Crosstown, SmartTrack are almost certainly to go online (or about to) during Tory's 1st and 2nd terms. That's a huge expansion in a short time period with a LOT of transit-related ribbon-cutting ceremonies for Tory. If Tory doesn't screw up 1st term and makes it to his 2nd. If cost overrun isn't too excessive, that brings Tory enough kudo points to make it to 3rd term. Both libs & cons at Queens and Parliament will find it convenient to have Tory at their side because he navigates so politically superbly with both red and blue. With Tory as cheerleader for any Ontario color willing to work with him, GO RER finishes electricifying all 7 GOtrain routes by end of his 3rd term, nailing a 4th term. "Subway" map literally quadrupled in size with the addition of all the new surface subways. Shovels in ground for DRL during 4th term. Toronto transit much easier in 1 mere human generation. Finally, shovels in the ground for the 4-track GO RER tunnel in 2031+. Even liberals will be happy to tolerate Tory. Just like Democrat New Yorkers tolerated Republician Michael Bloomberg. Heck. Maybe a good thing for Toronto's transit after all. Even if Tory has to keep car commuters happy by throwing the "keep-Gardiner" bone. Ironically, this is what Rob Ford wanted -- ("surface") subways, subways, subways. Ford gets what he wanted, despite voting against SmartTrack. Har Har.

Brilliant.
Yes. I see what you mean. You have a good point, sir.

Tory MIGHT still be around in the 2030s.

Only issue preventing a long reign would probably be his age. At 60 years old he would probably only want to be mayor for 8 years tops.

Tell that to Hazel McCallion. She started being mayor at 57, and had one of the longest reigns in history.

Mississauga is a total joke of a city with like 20% voter turnout and Hazel has left them in terrible shape for the future. She kept taxes low and now the city has traffic nightmares, not to mention abuses of power with her son.

I'm not sure we can say much about the sensibilities of Mississauga voters, given we elected Rob Ford, and put Doug Ford number 2 in the last election.

The areas where RoDoFo got the most votes has more in common with the burbs in any case. Oh and in case someone doubts that - guess which Ward Carolyn Parrish won in (and also guess who is playing the can Hurontario LRT and extend BD into Sauga game?).

Rob Ford won the majority of wards across the city. He might not have won all the downtown wards, but he did well in all of them. He even won an NDP stronghold - Ward 31 (Beaches). He did better in the burbs, but he got many votes downtown. Let's not simply blame the suburbanites.

It doesn't really matter because at the time he was considered a great candidate - fiscally conservative that would save the tax payers money. Of course if people knew he would turn into a crack addict/joke they would have never elected him, but hindsight is 20/20.

As one of the main candidates, of course he will get "many" votes downtown - let's not distract ourselves from the reality that he is mainly a suburban phenomenon. Let me rephrase - let's not blame the suburbanites - like us blame the voters, the majority of which came from the suburbs. How is that. And besides, let's not kid ourselves that his brother's run in 2014 isn't a referendum of his mayoralty, or that the split again suburban in nature (though you can also add in a wealth dimension to this, and no doubt along other axes as well). Fool me once...fooled me twice. Anyways, this is getting OT.
