Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

Apparently there are a lack of formal processes for permanent pedestrianization of streets (I smell a new set of jobs and reports) ...... because existing staff can't figure out 1 whole city block that is near perfect for this type of treatment.
The city must recognize the standard excuses (dwindling business, service access, etc) no longer apply and are aptly admitting defeat here.

They certainly should recognize that, however, they are not.

So the Hamster wheel shall churn further, unless TEYCC and Council direct otherwise.

Being a pedestrian zone is not what made the area unique in the first place.

I think the common theme here is that this area is heavily trafficked by pedestrians and should be designed in a way that makes it conducive for the existing pedestrians as well as future pedestrians to come.

You're not in agreement with what?

Everything I said was factual, there is no room to disagree with it. You can dislike pedestrian zones, but you can't disagree that this already is one 8 months of the year, and there is no obvious and compelling reason it cannot function as such the other 4 months. That isn't really disputable.

In any event, should you wish to dispute it, you ought to bring forth evidence in support of that.

By extending the current condition to 12 months per year?

There is no problem to fix, as such, what there is, is a problem to avoid.

There is a cost to un-doing the space as pedestrian space each winter, then reinstating it again only 4 months later.

Its a needless expense for no obvious again.

Further, retaining the option to re-open it to vehicles precludes any permanent changes in the right-of-way that may make the space even better, be that a stage, or fountain, or benches etc.

No, it IS pedestrianized right now. What is being said is that this should not be un-done for 4 months per year for no obvious gain.

The restaurant row, and the lower level of market have seen an increase in business with pedestrianization. The street is vastly more attractive in its current form and layout than it was previously, and much more enjoyable for locals and tourists alike.

At this juncture, I will remind everyone that the poster to whom I am replying is only visible here every few months, stays a few weeks to argue in only one or two threads, with contrarian view points that are typically anti-cycle and anti-pedestrian.

Generally, you can cross the street in Ontario wherever you please as well. The only rules are that you have to yield to traffic, and that if you're crossing at a light (or marked pedestrian crossing), you have to follow the signals and stay in the crosswalk area. The TPS says that the intersection/crosswalk rules apply to the area within 30 metres of an intersection/crosswalk.

Edit to add: I couldn't read the Times article, but found another article about it, and I guess their reform goes further by allowing you to cross at an intersection against the lights where safe to do so.
 
NYC just made jaywalking legal.

More pedestrian deaths?

No one has ever been killed by a vehicle crossing the street mid-block when there are no vehicles. People have been killed at intersections obeying the signals, when a car hasn't obeyed the signals.

It will be an interesting experiment to compare the before and after deaths. There's a couple of spots involving intersections of major and minor streets in this city where I make sure I cross mid-block, because the geometry at the intersection is odd, and it's easy to see how a car might miss the pedestrian.
 
It's about time for this! These idiots have no respect for anyone. i almost got run over by a delivery driver on his e bike as I was exiting a streetcar last week. He passed stopped cars and blew past the flashing red lights, nearly hitting people.

I have seen them zooming down the sidewalks, running red lights, and even zooming around the inside of Union Station as well! Someone will get killed or seriously injured.

“A lot of them are aligned with the food industry and there’s been a lack of education,” TPS Acting Supt. Matt Moyer tells CityNews. “As a result of that, it’s been very unclear as to what the standard and what the guidelines are for safe operation of these vehicles.”


The rider says he’s had his helmet stolen three times and was recently ticketed by police and fined $110.00 for riding without one.

That last one was a customer shuttle from a dealership and not a school bus. The student was waiting for the bus when a man in his 60s had a medical episode and hit her.

Funny, I almost never see cyclists wearing helmets.

Hope these pigs are as consistent in their application of helmet rules to cyclists, who are driving a more dangerous vehicle to themselves than a scooter.
