Redpath Sugar Refinery | 95 Queens Quay East

Conversion to lofts and mixed-use cultural center when?
Let's not re-open the discussions about Redpath. Many (including me) feel it provides useful employment and 'was there first', others want parkland or residential or ????? It will not move for decades.

Unpopular opinion but the only reason that Redpath hasn’t moved yet is that the correct price hasn’t been offered yet. 🫣

Sure, but that could be said about absolutely any buidling/property/piece of real estate.

Heck I'd sell my own home (which I'm perfectly happy in) for the 'right price'.

;)
Yeah, and the Redpath plant has a lot of infrastructure to replace

As @hawc noted, almost everything has "a price' and, maybe, one day Redpath will 'get an offer they can't refuse' but they have a huge investment in the current plant and have been doing upgrades to it over the last decade. There is lots of FAR cheaper land not too much further away and the City does have some ability (until Daddy Ford decides otherwise) to maintain the 'industrial' zoning of the site.

I have mixed emotions on this one. While I agree we need the industry and they have been there a long time, I sure would love to see this site redeveloped. In this market, we will be waiting a long time!

There are people who want the Portlands to be done over in the same way - build new commercial attractions and lots of shiny new residential. That ignores the venerable industrial base which is still very much operating down there - and the film production facilities too, for that matter, even though they are much more recent developments.

My position is that facilities like cement plants and sugar refineries have their legitimate place on the waterfront. It's about keeping the city viable on a number of levels. Besides, their presence, alongside other buildings typologies and purposes, keeps things interesting. We've already demonstrated our odd propensity for anonymous blue glass boxes - anything (almost!) which serves to disrupt that bland rhythm is fine by me.

Seeing as raw sugar comes from off-shore, Redpath is marine dependent. If it were to leave the waterfront, it would no doubt leave Toronto and likely Ontario. Sadly, some people would be ok with that.

Love Redpath. Love seeing the big ships in the harbour. Only thing I would ask would be to replace this ugly chain link fence with a beautiful brick wall, or maybe a wrought iron fence. A little bit of beautification would go a long way.

Toronto is addicted to this style of ugly ass fence. I swear it's one of the factors that contributes the most to parts of Toronto looking gross and uninviting sometimes. It is crazy how much more appealing our city could be if we got rid of that style of fence and instead opted for more appealing finishes in our public spaces.

I assume that is a private fence.
