Does anyone know how much Ivanhoe paid for their Rail Deck park air-rights? They purchased 4 acres of rights from Canadian National Railway and were expected to spend roughly $50M on that portion of the project (rights and construction).
If we need to go piecemeal as the edges get developed and cantilevered over the corridor, then so-be-it.

Better use of the money would be to build parkland and amenities at 28 Bathurst (Stackt), Bentway phase 2 & 3, mouth of the creek park, Wellington Destructor and all the land around it, Stanley Park south, Ordnance Triangle and top it off with a pedestrian bridge or gondola to the island. Once you finish all that, then they can talk about needed raildeck park. All the land I mentioned is already owned by the city and parks department and can be built soon to meet the growing demand.

This park will become a tourism magnet like Millennium Park in Chicago.
It will bring lots of tourism dollars into the coffers of the city of Toronto which can be used to spend on transit and other areas.
This park needs to be done right. Toronto should hire the same people who built and designed Millennium Park.

Assuming when and if the park gets built, it doesnt get Toronto'ed (ie: suffer from The Cheapening) then you would be right.
But with the dozens of other public improvement projects we've seen take place in this city over the years, i'm not holding my breath for this park to be built let alone having it be near the scale of Millennium Park.

Ridiculous. A 4 billion dollar boondoggle of a concrete carpark roof with a few dying stunted trees and a view of lots of mediocre condos. No one is going to travel more than 2 minutes to see poopdeck park.

Never been along Bloor Street or Danforth Avenue, where they built parks over the subway with large trees currently growing.

...and we need to have Anish Kapoor design another sculpture that would define Toronto and have him use Vantablack (black so black, it does not reflect any light), which he has the exclusive artistic rights to use. After all, he designed Cloud Gate in Millennium Park and Chicago tourism brochures often include a photo of Cloud Gate.
Yes, Simcoe Place has a Kapoor sculpture, but it's not world-famous:

All due respect, you should go to Wikipedia, for starters, and read about the budget for Millennium Park and who paid for it.
SPOILER: It wasn't cheap or under budget or entirely paid for by the municipality, which didn't own the air rights.
But having lived my whole life in and around Toronto, I do understand the need for us to look at what other cities have done and find a way to do the same things much less practically, many years later. Speaking of which, gonna see what's up on the DRL thread!
