Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

This all heakens back to the old days when it was an accepted given that many positions such, even drilling down the local coroner, MTO roads supervisor, etc. would be replaced upon the turn of the government for friends, supporters, persons of the 'right' religion, Masons, etc.

I don't get the 'Barbie camper van' thing. Is a fleet Suburban not big enough? If it turns out they want it armoured or something is simply off the dial. What concerns me more is the request that his security detail be comprised of members he is "comfortable with". That has got to be code for something.

The OPP, certainly the senior command, has normally enjoyed public anonymity because of their deployed nature and lack of media concentration in much of their territory. Most citizens probably couldn't name the Commissioner and whoever is the commissioner probably doesn't effect the road grunts day-to-day life one bit. What is damaging to morale is their organization being dragged into the muck.

He's probably watching Trump get away with his bull in a china shop routine and is honestly perplexed as to why he isn't allowed to do the same thing.

If anything, this reminds me of that weird little incident when Slob showed up at a local prison in the middle of the night and fully expected to get access to one of the inmates without any of the fuss and bother of going through proper channels just because he was Mayor. Which meant he didn't have to obey any faggoty rules or laws, right?
 
I just finished reading a fascinating book about the Weimar Republic called "The Death of Democracy":

The major point was of course that business executives and the conservative establishment aided and abetted the Nazis, with a mind to "control" them. We are far away from that situation (no Stormtroopers anyway), but the resemblance is disturbing all the same. We were all told how Ford would be "controlled" by all those establishment types like Elliott and Mulroney. He wouldn't be so bad, and certainly better than the socialist hordes or Wynne. Or so the thinking went. To anyone with any sense, it was obvious that Ford was and is a volatile asshole who has no regard for institutional norms, basic truth, or doing well by the "people". He's just an asshole. Fortunately he's also a terrible speaker and the more spontaneous his speaking, the worse it is.

Somewhat similar to how Americans thought that people like Tillerson & McMaster would 'control" Trump - we all know how THAT is going. Though I am not a Conservative I used to think that they had some people who were fairly reasonable (like Elliott and Mulroney) but they appear to have sold their souls. In the words of Trump, "SAD"!

This whole campaign bus fiasco tells us a lot:

  • Where else is he mucking around? This can't be the only time
  • Deco must be in bad shape, otherwise he'd have just "bought it himself"
  • He's clearly planning to go on a rally tour of rural Ontario. Probably going to fight Trudeau
  • He could have easily done it all by the book, but he can't help himself
  • Premier French has his fingers in everything. Pretty clear who's actually in charge

The premier is entitled to a vehicle (by current policy/law) furnished by the OPP, on the books. Bad Taste aside, the only thing that seems to be wrong w/this request is that its 'off the books'.

Barring a further surprise...........this seems like an extraordinary self-inflicted would. Take a legal request, turn it into a scandal by trying to hide it.

The other issue seems to be that they specified who to buy it from, "sole source" as opposed to open to get the best deal.
