Parking - Catch All

Those two Green P lots are going. But the biggest lot (the one closest to the station) is staying for now (though presumably will be impacted by the Weston redevelopment if that ever goes ahead).

The chuch that accompanied that Cedarvale lot is long gone. I guess we are going full circle here - perhaps they can build a structure above/aside the substation and restore housing to that lot.

The remaining lot is not a Green P lot, it has higher rates and is functionally customer parking for the Valu-Mart.

The Choice/Weston site seems likely to go ahead; but nothing is guaranteed, of course.

The loss of the parking here won't affect me; its a question of whether it causes issues for others, and what that then results in............

Also, those lots have historically supported Bikeshare, and Carshare, which promote reduced car ownership. The loss of these locations will be an issue. The Valu-Mart lot is unlikely to surrender any space for those purposes.

Yes, it has higher rates. Probably much of the reason that it's always got space available (when I've been there - I normally just walk to Valumart).

It's certainly used for customer parking for Valumart - but from my experience in the store (which is the grocery store I spend the most time these days!), very few people in the store are parking and driving. I think most of the people parking in that lot, aren't there to do their groceries!

Weston plays a very long game with it's development work; they'd think little of postponing a project for a decade or two if the economics change - though it's harder to find a more prime spot than right there! As a local, I'll miss the years of a missing grocery store far more than the parking! (if I really want to take a car to do groceries, I go to the bigger Loblaws on VP).

I have discussed, not so long ago..............the problem of the Parking Strategy having disappeared into an ether............

Perhaps my concerns were noted........ ;)

Lo' and behold................a brand new survey in support of the long lost Parking Strategy:

@HousingNowTO will definitely want to give his input.

Some background for those unfamiliar w/this matter.........

The gist here...........this is your chance to say how parking should be priced, and how curb-side space on main streets should be prioritized.

Go get'em UT.

* asterisk here, just to warn people this is long 'ish survey and will probably take you a good 15 minutes. Be prepared to read some questions twice and to use the available space to explain answers.

I filled it in. I didn't provide text supplements to all my selections, but focused on a few. My main point that I reiterated in a few places is that on-street parking shouldn't be viewed as part of a lively commercial street. On-street parking only accommodates a tiny fraction of the total number of people using the street (customers of the local businesses in particular), they're often taken up by the owners of the businesses rather than their customers, and there is usually abundant off-street parking a short walk from the destinations on the street (often a shorter walk than people would experience if they were trying to park and access a business in one of Toronto's malls).

Also a few comments about much higher pricing to ensure spots are available when needed (helps avoid congestion caused by circling while looking for parking) and considering the relative price of taking transit vs parking for a group of people going to events.
