OLG Toronto/GTA casino proposal (where to put it?)

You cannot use money from foreign corporations.

Ok...if that is a rule, I can accept that....just seems to add a step (ie. US company makes money in foreign business....foreign subsidiary pays dividend back to US company....US company pays to major shareholder....shareholder give money to a PAC).

Now that you have clarified that.....can you point me to the investigation? Would be interested in reading about it.

Why not invite three or four casino developers to present bids and select the best one from the lot? Have a classy set-up down by the water.

Why not invite all 3 or 4, or do we want to establish another monopoly or set up some healthy competition?

Give them all a homestead in the portlands, God knows no one else wants anything to do with the location.

there is a new bill that is about to be passed that will allow single game sports betting to be allowed in casinos.

Basically you can bet on the outcome of one game or event instead of doing a parlay. This will bring hundreds of millions into Toronto from around ontario and even people visiting toronto from america since only vegas allows single sports betting in america.

A casino in Toronto will be the most profitable casino in north america other than the ones in vegas.

Presumably, not the NBA?

No fair just repeating what I said, Spitter. Get the first one built, see how we like it, then maybe invite others to compete.

Ya It'll be like how pro line is right now im guessing. The NBA doesnt allow cities that have legal sports betting to have teams. Thats one reason why Las Vegas cant have a team.

Do we really need a National Bowling Association team in this city? We already have enough losing sports franchises as it is. Though most appear to be doing okay business-wise.

I'm on the side of a casino too, I'd hate to see the city lose this massive investment opportunity and provide yet another attraction for visitors.

I don't know about this one... stating that a building will be world-class doesn't automatically make it so. If the GTA were to have a Casino, I'd rather have it in Toronto, in an area already popular with tourists. I would also hope that it be well designed, with a decent street presence and good mix of uses, though I can't help but be skeptical

Couldn't the Province and the OLC say too bad, so sad NBA? Would they really revoke the Raptors' franchise or relocate over that?

Toronto should approve it and work to get the best deal for the city in terms of profit sharing.

Otherwise it goes to Markham or Mississauga, where they get the construction fees, property tax and ...oh...Jobs!
The only people who will benefit from the casino going to Markham ( my 2nd choice) or Mississauga are citizens of those cities and the hotels and restaurants and shops in the area.

People will take the TTC up to Finch, maybe there is a benefit for the city there in increased TTC ridership northbound in the morning?

This thing will get built. It will get built downtown or in the suburbs. If built downtown, it will assuredly be more successful and will add to the wealth of offerings this city has for tourists. It will make it a more desirable convention and trade show destination and it appeals to a segment of the travel market which is monied and maybe not interested in "the Museum of Toronto".

The problem gamblers will make the trip to Mississauga to lose their shirts. Don't you worry about that. Maybe you can maintain a high and mighty attitude for having rejected the tainted money derived from sin. But then you are just left with untainted reputation.

Let the American corporation build it, get as much as you can out of it and boost the business around it to make it a place to visit in this city.
Invest in the area around the casino and the tourists will embrace it. Not every casino visitor will wear depeds to the poker table.

Will the american corporations even want to build in Markham or Mississauga? They seem set on getting a dt central/waterfront location. I don't really like the ultimatum either. We shouldn't be jumping through hoops to get this approved faster. It's a game changer for the city and I'm not convinced yet that it's for the better. I really want to see a careful study of this.
