The skies opened up yesterday, and in the narrowest stretch of the Don Valley south of Bloor Street, the Don River crested above its banks, flooding the Bayview Extension and the Don Valley Parkway. In this image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor hawc, police vehicles are parked at the edge of the flooded southbound lanes, while cars are inundated at the bottom of the Dundas Street onramp in the northbound lanes. With the plug at the new Don River exit to Lake Ontario still being opened, the water could not move quickly enough and backed up over the roadways. In the future, floodwater will be able to exit the river more quickly in similar major rain events, but not necessarily quickly enough to avoid flooding every time.
