These are located just west of Yonge on Dundas. They don’t look too bad and they make the street a lot less cluttered.

Ohhh, I like! Doesn't took too cluttered, though I wonder where Eye and Metro will go (with the other freebees present I notice).

The worst case of newspaper box clutter I've come across is in front of Runnymede station, especially as they all look like they were all haphazardly thrown there.

i saw a new style recycle bin, blue with 2 compartments, being dropped off this morning at the NW corner of University/Queen by a city of Toronto truck .. not sure if these are advance previews of some of the new street furniture to guage public opinion?

That's really odd, since I thought the process of having a unified street furniture provider is still in progress. I wonder who's responsible for it. Eucan trying to buy some sympathy votes?

SP,

There were two bins. Eye and all the other free newspapers were not left out.

There are two different boxes posted, but they look like they're mere meters from eachother. You can see the Metro bin in the top pic on the far top right, and it looks to be next to Condo Guide/House Guide. One of the smaller ones might be for Eye but I can't read it.

EDIT: You beat me to it! I hate posting at the same time.

Thank You. Can we get this going asap. arghhh...please don'ttell me we have to wait for years of testing now.

Eucans version was slightly different. Two meters high and you could find where to put your .50 to get you paper.

That bin is placed in a very low profile place, I'm not sure what their intention is by putting it there. This is on Dundas walking towards Bay.

I guess the city is probably testing the waters hoping to get newspapers to agree to this. I recall many newspapers crying about losing their identities by losing their own boxes.

Another comment I'd like to add is that this will definitely crack down on illegal bins. The city estimates that 15 to 20% of newspaper bins don't have a license.

Keeping them in check with the current clutter is a mammoth task. With an "official" bin, odd ones will be easy to spot and removed by the city and their owners consequently fined. Love it.

I can't wait to see all those bins on Queen + University disappear from obscuring the beautiful Osgoode Hall gate.

... and yet another comment (lol, I'm on a roll on this topic):

I would suggest the city consider ridged, jagged or bumpy sides on the final designed box. This would be to prevent (or at least deter) poster people from adhering posters to the sides of these boxes.

Adding ridges or elevations to city benches did well in removing skate boarding activity downtown. The same could be done for posters.

While we're at it, design a poster-unfriendly street light pole as well when looking into unifying street furniture.

Indeed, this side is very nice. Dare I ask what is on the street facing side?

^ It's reasonable to believe that there is a billboard on the opposite side.

I too wonder why they put a newspaper box there. I am not sure it needs 'testing' as many big cities in North American use them. And if we are getting bids on a contract soon, why spend the money.

The design is nothing special (and I hope for better from the winning bid) but the concept is great and will really clean up some of the clutter on the streets.

ya know... I kinda liked the melange of old newspaper bins. It was gritty, urban and highlighted the strength of Toronto's newspaper market...
