Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

The area was a jewel up to the 1940's: beautiful homes, tree-lined streets, European style park, etc.

After the 1940's, the whole area surrounding Allan Gardens - Jarvis to Dundas to Sherbourne - went downhill fast. An absolute travesty what developers and planners did to the whole area. The buildings built were shameful and ugly. Virtually everything good was undone.

It will take decades to reverse - if possible - the damage done to this area. They could start by knocking down the poorly designed awful 1960's / 1970's box towers.

I was at a meeting at Adelaide and York and Thanks to my handy dandy BlackBerry I was able to capture this shot.

Due to TIMFX's splendid post, which is also about half a weeks worth of daily additions (Hello and Welcome TIMFX); and Aladone's post which represents some quick and creative thinking while bored in a business meeting, :) , I'm going to take a few days off.

Aladone, if you ever make it up there again we need the whole Rossin House 1856 Panorama set.

I'll resume posting Daily Additions next Monday Feb 21st around midnight.

I do have two appeals tonight:

First. See below. The street sign says "Church" street. But I am stumped. Where exactly is this on Church street?

Second. 600 Queen street west is the old Orpheum movie house. Its old movie house "fossil record" is still much in evidence - Google streetview if you are curious. I need a "Then" picture - so that I can do a Then and Now. Can anyone help?

Thank you in advance.

It's been years but I remember some incident about reuse of beer that was left over in pitchers.

That is disgusting. I've also seen people have sex on the dance floor there. Oh, and people have MURDERED in the back alley.

"Where exactly is this on Church street?" QUOTE - Moose aka Mustapha.

Well, the BOB FERRIS SMOKE SHOP was a relative "newcomer", to the area, THE ROSS CIGAR STORE preceeding at 391 Church Street. (1942)

Of course the CLOVER RESTAURANT aka CLOVER LUNCH at 389 Church Street

just south of Carlton Street

WAS there during "42.

Thanks JT, there is a 70s era building there now that takes up the whole block.

February 22 addition.

Then. "Mar 27 1950. Lawrence Park ravine looking SE towards Yonge and Glencairn".

That's the long gone Muir Park Hotel in the distance. A 1980s era condo replaced it.

Now. February 2011. The creek has been buried too.

What, are they storing radioactive waste in there?

Pity the heritage building in America's decaying industrial heartland. Which reminds me, we've seen very little in the way of "ruin porn" on this thread -- the fortunate result of living in a boomtown?
