Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Thanks for the LC site - they have quite a few Toronto photos. Go to http://www.loc.gov/pictures/ and type in Toronto.

I have not looked at them all but this one caught my eye, I have never seen the full panorama before.

Kew Beach homes were once right at water's edge (1919).
Dozens were demolished for boardwalk and parklands.

At the bottom of Wineva Avenue are several fourplexes - as close to the lake as you can get in the city of Toronto I believe. Nice Then and Now Goldie; in a neighbourhood that is a delight to stroll.

August 18 2013 CNE walk.



Heya. I didn't go out intending to get pictures for a Then and Now.

When I looked at my shots I decided to browse the interwebs and grab some related vintage pictures.

So, this is a CNE walk with a few sort-of Then and Nows thrown in. Oh, and the angles are a bit off.

Those of you over the age of 25, remember the Flyer rollercoaster?

Those of you under 25, there was a rollercoaster called the Flyer situated right smack dab in Midway Central.

In the Enbridge Centre I came across this - let me call it - a 'Flyer rollercoaster remnant' display with a projection screened video of the ride.

Tilt-a-Whirl...

Not saying this is the same one. But, I had a close look, and it's very old machinery.

If you can ever feel sorry for an inanimate toy; this is the lady. She's sayin win-me-and-take-me-home.

We always referred to it as the "Tilt A Hurl"!

You're posting a Then and Now and there's a sign about the Beach Boys performing at the CNE in the NOW photo???? And I remember hearing them there in 1977. Yes, they're doing the PNE here too. No, I'm not going. Though we are going Wednesday because my wife wants to hear Great Big Sea - my first ever PNE visit in 23 years of living in Vancouver, and that despite having gone to the CNE just about every year for the first 22 or so years of my life.

Yeah, nicely Moderne (and interesting, the Street Cars sign on one of the Coliseum towers).

But the new version definitely demonstrates the sad, disinterested deterioration in "carny aesthetic" over the years...

Very interesting to note than even ~120 years ago this house had a business at the front. I had always assumed that most of these houses were modified in the mid 1900s.
