Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Heya brewster, you've been missed.

Quite the reacqaintance post there.

I see you're still taking risks with the traffic to get just the right angle. :)

Thank you so much. A walk in Time up and down Avenue Road.

"on Edward; at the northeast corner of Edward and Elizabeth, is a vacant lot."
QUOTE Mustapha.

MIGHT'S TORONTO CITY DIRECTORY - 1942 (41):

Grey Coach Garage, n/s Edward, Bay to Elizabeth Streets.

...................................................

Between Edward & Elm, w/s was a Ford/Lincoln dealer? that was burned-out

during the 70's? and moved to Front Street W at the Picture Gallery? Or was that

in the next block north? (Elm to Walton Streets?) Do bear in mind that the present

refurbished hotel continues at Bay/Elm, s/w corner.

Regards,
J T

Ah, so the bus terminal owners - probably - still own that parcel.

And... Bay Lincoln Mercury [the building], did go up in flames, not sure of the date, or whether they had already moved. Yes, it was on that same block; to the north east, fronting on Bay street.

"or whether they had already moved."
QUOTE Mustapha.

I believe that they moved due to the fire, and the previous tenant on

Front Street was Elgin Motors, a Ford Dealer.

k10ery, thank you for the scans of those newspaper articles. If you had to go to the library to do this.. quintuple thanks. Supremely interesting to someone like me - descended of Chinese immigrants who didn't quite make it into the entrepreneurial classes like those go-getters in Vancouver of the 1950s.

Yes, she became rather famous a couple of decades ago for wearing loud hats and yelling even more loudly at a certain W. Vanderzalm about a real estate transaction that went sideways.

Jack Chow, or at least his insurance agency, continues to operate out of the same Chinatown building, which purports to be the world's narrowest building, with a Guinness citation in the window to support the claim.

Lots of immigrant community newspapers digitized here: http://content.lib.sfu.ca/cdm/

Quite a group of people you've assembled around this thread. Who knew about Faye Leung, let alone could pick her out of some random newspaper ad in 1960?

And... Bay Lincoln Mercury [the building], did go up in flames, not sure of the date, or whether they had already moved. Yes, it was on that same block; to the north east, fronting on Bay street.

I could pretend that the following re-revisitation of Bay and Elm was prompted by this mention a few pages back, but really I just wanted to insert a new photo I found, add an annotation or two, as well as look at the North East corner of Bay and Elm... apologies if this has been covered before.

My previous post, with addition:

This will be a slight revisitation of a corner previously posted (by Mustapha and colbyb somewhere in this thread) -- I don't *think* anyone has compiled all of these together. [and if they have, well, here goes anyway]

Then: Bay and Elm, SE corner, 1928

A slight turn eastwards, in 1952:

1952+ (?) The light /wire post seems to have been changed from the previous photo, so I'm guessing it's later... The tenant is the Village House Hotel. Note 'Ladies Entrance' on south end.

My new photo:A slightly better angle on Davey C's Tavern -- allegedly 1978-80ish:

And April 2012

Now, as compensation for my repost of previously covered material, let's shift our view to the north east corner of Bay and Elm:

Then - Oct 1928 (comparing to the 1952 straight east view on Elm above, it's not clear whether this is still standing in 1952):

Then 50(ish) years later, 1978(?) (the set is labelled from 1977-1998), as Mustapha noted, the Lincoln sales building:

and Now: (June 2012): I think (but am not sure) that those two manholes are the same.

Bonus:
Then: Bay looking N from Elm, May 1958
bayelm1958lookingn.jpg

Now: Bay looking N from Elm, June 2012 (from s side of Elm as I wanted a slightly wider view) Can you see anything that's the same??
bayelmlookingn2012.jpg

I had intended to do a quick set for 650 Bay (the SW corner of Bay and Elm), but I seem to have misplaced the 'then' photos. (I am pretty sure they're kicking around this thread somewhere via someone else, but I want to gather them all in one place :) If I find them I'll post.)

Good day.

Astute observation regarding tailfins & Libeskind, adma.
CONGRATULATIONS!

The gas station here was a real charmer.

The Atlas Helio store sign graphics and mysterious sounding name made me Goggle them up. They were in the blueprint printing and 'photostat' business.
