Like to Post Ratio

[Northern Light]

At the UT get together for the Spadina extension opening, I recall some interest in seeing a like-to-post ratio added to the member statistics.

I think the only critique was the need for a minimum post number, for the resulting information to be useful.

Was that given any further consideration?

I went to the forum stats page, 'likes' window.

Then I opened an Excel Spread sheet and set up 4 columns, name, likes, posts, ratio.

I input a formula likes/posts = ratio.

Then I copy/pasted the data over.

Then I used the sort function to organize the list by ratio from largest to smallest.

Then I copy/pasted the result back.

I edited it to make it easier to read, as excel formatting doesn't copy over cleanly.

Bit of a hassle as the likes page isn't set up that way exactly. But took me 30 minutes while eating dinner.

Not to quibble as this is certainly interesting BUT, IIRC, "likes' are a fairly recent innovation on UT. Thus people who have been posting for many years have a whole batch of posts which are unlikely to have been liked.

Intentionally or not, this is eerily similar (perhaps unavoidably) with 'mining Facebook'.

The likes of AggregateIQ, SCL and I'm sure many others not yet decloaked did exactly this, with added layers, some of them honed to let through 'certain colours' (you mine for something you're looking for usually) and the result further filtered and combed to 'resemble known clusters'. And their predictability.

Credit to Northern Light for doing what he has in "30 minutes". I question the value ascribed to the outcome, but I'm in total awe of how easily he did this. There's a sobering point being made there.

It wasn't around when I started UT either!

I would have separated it out if the public data allowed that (post from the BL (Before 'Like') period would have been excluded. LOL But ya work w/what ya got.

I meant to post a proviso that what you did was purely sorting information clearly in the public domain and innocuous. My point was how easily such a simple and quick execution of data can reveal aspects of individual identities (mostly aliases in this case), and how such techniques, overlaid with other matrices of information, (where the morality of doing so becomes questionable, depending on the intent of the exercise) reveal vastly more about those identities than those persons ever intended or would want.

I was a bit taken aback at how a spreadsheet program would show so much, but to state that displays my own naivete. And society's with the 'revelations' coming out of the Facebook imbroglios. And it's far more than Facebook, they're just the 'usual suspect'.

You do realize that you could be posting from the Moon, aspects of your IP will be tracked. All that VPN blocks is Google (and others) *targeting* your presence for ads, (and even there, exceptions exist) not blocking the signatures of the nature of your activity and history.

Nobody is truly invisible on the Internet, even with Private/Incognito/InPrivate Browsing on with various ad blockers, script blockers, and various activity logger blockers enabled.

It just minimizes your presence, but not fully eliminate it. Often, it's a false sense of privacy.

Yes, the Like to Post ratio is not accurate, given that many members (including myself) have posted numerous posts before we moved to XenForo (the current forum software for UT).
