Historic photos from Toronto on this day

Some observations on the Davisville Tennis club photos:

- the metal poles along Mount Pleasant are still there, and the one at Millwood is still standing at that exact same angle
- the Millwood Road sign also continued to exist until very recently, when the local BIA placed new ones all along the Mount Pleasant strip, with the exception of the signs at the northeast corner of Mount Pleasant and Davisville that are still in mint condition
- the stepped wooden shed at the edge of the tennis club is still there, and is repainted every year by the club
- as I suspected, the houses on the south side of Davisville match the still-existing houses on the north side stretching east from Yonge. There are still a few survivors along Balliol on the south side just west of Mount Pleasant

Sorry to let you know but this survivor will be demolished for guess what? ... another condo.

That's really too bad. I wonder if the front is historic / interesting enough to be included as part of the new building.

And fiendishlibrarian, thanks for the details on the tennis club... the roadsigns are interesting, in fact I captured one along Avenue Road for my photoblog back in September 2004

October 13th: Just one historic photo today, from 96 years ago, looking west along St. Clair Avenue towards Bathurst Street after the ravine was filled in, back in 1914:

There are a bunch of photos from this area which you can see on this map, including the home of Robert John Fleming that you can see through the trees on the right of this picture, more of the fence, and the ski hill just off to the right of this picture, lots of photos of them filling in the ravine, then the ravine a bit further south, in 1974 when they were considering the subway, and so on...

That's really too bad. I wonder if the front is historic / interesting enough to be included as part of the new building.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are such negotiations in the process (though at the moment, it's not on the Inventory--I think)

October 14th: Two photos from 1913 to start with today, back 97 years ago today. The first is of a very civilized looking Bellevue Square with trees and a fountain in Kensington Market:

Then south to Victoria Memorial Park (Square) and the War of 1812 Memorial:

Then from the parks to the more mundane - the back of 115-117 Sherbourne Street in 1938:

October 15th: Two pictures from parks back in 1915, but I'm not sure if they are the same park, now Oakmount Park:

Then we move to 1921 and the construction of the Coliseum down at the CNE grounds:

October 16th: Here's the corner of Kingston Rd, looking west, from Victoria Park Ave, 88 years ago, in 1922 (the two story store is still there, with additional units built to the west):

Then in 1926 we have a view of Dupont St, looking east, from Clinton:

And finally, we have the back of 284 Dupont Street, Downtown Chinese Food, in 1977:

October 17th: We start with two views from the corner of Eglinton Ave West where Dufferin and Vaughan meet back in 1924, 86 years ago today. First looking west:

The block of stores on the left side of the picture still stand. And then looking east:

Then, in 1935, we return to Lytton Park in leafy North Toronto to see the railing they installed - it doesn't look as interesting as the sketch we saw back on October 10th, 1934 though...

October 18th: A rather moody photo from 98 years ago today, of the corner of Broadview and the Danforth on a Friday, looking west towards the Don River in 1912:

And then in 1933 we have a cat enjoying the sun at the back of of 81-83 Oxford Street in Kensington Market 77 years ago:

October 18th: A rather moody photo from 98 years ago today, of the corner of Broadview and the Danforth on a Friday, looking west towards the Don River in 1912:

I love that shot!
Certainly different from the one I made in 2009 (attached).

Thanks for the photo, Goldie, I wonder what people in 2110 will think of these two photos almost 100 years apart, 100 years later.

October 19th: Our photographer was focusing on TTC track constuction 88 years ago today, in 1922. First, two photos from Eglinton Ave West, at Duplex. Looking west from Yonge Street:

Then looking back east, from just beyond Duplex, with the Hydro building being built, which still stands today:

We then head farther up Yonge Street... Lawrence Avenue, looking north:

Loading platform at Glen Echo on Yonge Street - north end:

And finally more streetcar tracks on Yonge St, this time looking south from city limit (which I assume was Yonge Blvd):

October 23rd: We start off back in 1914, at Lake Simcoe Ice Co. property on the south side of Esplanade East (83 Esplanade East - near foot of Frederick Street) 96 years ago, down in the St. Lawrence area:

And then over to The Junction to the Royce Avenue Presbyterian Church 1543-1551 Dupont Street (at Perth) in 1958:

October 25th: Two pictures today, starting with the C.N.R. Riverdale Station, Queen and De Grassi streets back in 1927 in Riverdale looking east from Queen Street:

Then in 1949 we're on St. George Street looking south below Bloor Street into the University of Toronto:
