Hamilton International Airport

The hotel costs in Canada have sky rocketed since Covid. I don’t get why! A normal standard hotel room in a city used to be $200-300 tops. Now it’s almost double that. Unless one is on a corporate rate the nightly stay is upwards of $300-500/ night. Crazy. If it’s in peak day/season easily can be double that.

Staffing shortage, inflation, decline of Airbnb.....

To add to what @kEiThZ has said above, many cities have removed substantial portions of the supply leasing them as shelters.

There are at least 17 hotels currently being used as shelters; this is beyond the motels that the City purchased pre-pandemic for housing refugee families.

That represents at least 1,500 rooms of supply.

On top of that, the City has bought some hotel sites as permanent housing (Bond Place Hotel in Toronto) withdrawing another 285 rooms; and again going back to before the pandemic, a sizable hotel at Carlton/Jarvis became a student residence, and more than a decade ago, the University of Toronto bought the former downtown Holiday Inn behind City Hall.

On top of all that, condos have removed supply; the former Sutton Place Hotel downtown is now condos.

Room supply in 2017, in the downtown area of Toronto was no greater than in the year 2000; and the supply has since shrunk. A small number of hotels have been added, but more beds withdrawn even as the population has surged.

Edit to add, you'll see different submarkets preforming differently.

So, for instance, room supply near Pearson is more robust than downtown.

*****

That said, if you're looking at off-season pricing (now), you'll find Toronto rates have moderated quite a bit. There are rooms at the Royal York next week for under $300 a night.

For comparison, The Chelsea will cost you more than $350 a night by mid-June, the Royal York starts from $460 that weekend.

I suspect it’s less worker shortages which should be resolved mostly now with wage increases and massive immigration. I think in the large cities yes the hotel supply is limited due to its use for refugee housing by the city. I’m not sure if AirBnB has gone down much. AirBnB has become ridiculously expensive with all the fees that hotels are often cheaper unless one wants a kitchen or travelling with a large group.

Hi, looking at flying into YHM from the UK (via KEF) - flight is cheap - only worry is that car rental places all seem to only be open from 2 til 7 pm... flight lands at 545 pm - will i have enuf time to clear customs and collect a car?

I would call the car rental places. They sometimes have some after hours systems set up in place to rent a car etc.

You can also take an Uber from YHM and travel 20-30 minutes to get more car rental options.

City of Hamilton press release:

City signs $400 million deal investing in John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport
The City of Hamilton and TradePort International Corporation have finalized a historic $400 million agreement to further develop and expand John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport over a 49-year term. The deal, signed on September 13, 2024, secures significant investment from TradePort, a wholly owned subsidiary of Vantage Group, a global airport development and transportation infrastructure leader.

$400MM over 49 years.... golf clap ! Focus on spend will be in areas outside of passenger areas (only will happen when there is carrier induced demand)

As BCTed on SSP noted ....

Heck, Kelowna is spending more over just the next decade: https://ylw.kelowna.ca/business/projects-and-planning

"Between 2024 and 2033, YLW will invest approximately $422 million in upgrades to airport infrastructure. The expansion is funded through airport revenues and Airport Improvement Fees and is not funded by tax dollars."

Great! When RyanAir enters the Canadian Market I see them choosing Hamilton.
Michael O’Leary (Ryanair boss) has said many times he doesn’t see transatlantic as a fit for his business model.
Example from 2015:

Great! When RyanAir enters the Canadian Market I see them choosing Hamilton.
No European Low-Cost is gonna cross the Atlantic while keeping it's low-cost reputation.
For the ones that consider it as an option I think once a week will be most they will do

I read this article on Play Airlines, which uses YHM as a start/end point for LCC route to Europe through Iceland. While I understand it does well, I fear that they will wrap things up to compete more on shorter routes.

Other than a very small number of WestJet flights, is there any other passenger airline besides Play that uses YHM? When I click-on arrivals or departures, I see CargoJet and not much else.

Well Air Canada has multiple departures daily! Ok its a bus to YYZ T1... Just will have Sunwing and Air Transat I think for the winter season. Such a sad outcome.
