GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I wonder if this is a 'staging' for a future restoration of service to London. I suspect it could not be performed with current infra if MX/QP wants a morning service both ways to and from Union.
I seem to recall that there was an issue with, I think, the bridge in St. Mary's that forced them to use smaller locomotives on the trip, and I believe they also need two locomotives, though it may have been for other reasons.

That's a CPCK issue.
I have to disagree. If enough money was offered to CPKC to run one return trip on Saturday's & Sunday's, I'm sure CPKC would play ball. One weekend GO train is not going to interupt CPKC's current freight sevice on the line. No, I believe why the Milton line is neglected is because of the proximity to the Lakeshore West line. You live in Milton like I do, they expect you to just drive down 25 to Bronte. They don't care that the train is crush load comming out of Burlington. Same with other stations on the line. Why invest for all day service to Cooksville when you can have your passengers use Port Credit, instead of Erindale, use Clarkson. I don't believe any government (Liberal, Conservativ, NDP) will ever invest in all day weekend service on the Milton Line for those reasons.

LOL, CPKC; and No, CPKC would be fine with a couple of weekend runs.

Stay tuned. Your beliefs may be challenged sooner than later.

what is someone bout to spend the $5 billion for the bypass hub or whatever its called?

The details of what's coming will be revealed in due course. I can't put them all out publicly or my sources of information would dry up in a hurry.

That's a CPCK issue.
source? Trains have been run at irregular times many occasions on the Milton line in the past few months that indicate current service levels are far less than what is possible.

- September 13 2025: (a Saturday): 12:54pm eastbound train, 6:29pm westbound train
- September 27 2025 (a Saturday): 2:27pm eastbound train, 4:27pm eastbound train, 7:04pm westbound train, 7:34pm westbound train
- October 25 2025 (a Saturday): 4:30pm eastbound train, 12:30am westbound train
- November 3 2025: +2 trains in each direction (12 instead of 10) due to Lakeshore West closure
- December 24 2025: 9:30 am eastbound train, 10:30 am eastbound train, 1:40pm westbound train, 2:40pm westbound train
- December 31 2025: 8:30pm eastbound train, 9:30pm eastbound train, 12:55am westbound train, 2:55am westbound train

I highly doubt all of this necessitated intricate planning with CPKC

As I said just above, CPKC would be fine with a couple of weekend runs, they are not the issue, for that particular service ask.

Don’t expect you to answer, since you’ve given your reason.

But this is clearly a hint at something to come for Milton. in 2024, the prov announced they would invest in 2WAD. Gotta wonder what in particular it would be. Wonder if it’s just weekend runs.

I’m hoping for work towards 2WAD and for intermediate runs on the weekend, maybe a counter peak.

And if it’s expansion for 2WAD, the gov has flirted w/ GO 2.0 bypasses. Wonder if they’re serious about that, or if it’s the Halton sub type new track solution.

Super exciting.

I checked the Kitchener line schedule. If it takes an hour and 45 minutes to get to Kitchener from Union, then a 2 1/2 hour trip to Stratford implies a 45 minute trip from Kitchener to Stratford.

Which is my point - 26 miles in 45 minutes = about 34 mph. The 1:40ish to Kitchener already has some terminal padding built in. If one extends that run to Stratford, the padding moves to the Stratford section and the Kitchener timing improves, or the Stratford section should be realistic. I would expect that with track capable of even 60 mph, that segment could have a travel time of 30 minutes or less.

It absolutely did.

GO has a window for service inbound from 6am to 9am, and from outbound 3pm to 7pm. CPKC, in return, try and schedule their trains so that there are no inbounds in the morning, and no outbounds in the evening. This prevents having GO trains have to try and pass freights going in the same direction.

It's not perfect, obviously, but they've made it work pretty well for the past 40+ years.

Any trains outside those windows require negotiation and careful coordination in order to ensure that the GO trains are routed on the correct tracks (as not all tracks have platforms), at the correct times, and that any freights that are also running at that time routed around those GO trains. And if there are places where freight trains are scheduled to meet, to work around those or delay them if absolutely necessary.

For folks on this thread, right before the COVID pandemic there were persistent rumours that Metrolinx had negotiated bi-hourly (every 2 hour) service for the Milton and Richmond Hill Lines 7 days per week. That obviously never materialized, but just a reminder what the rumour mill thought was possible over half a decade ago.

I heard it too it definitely seemed like something that was about to happen before covid struck. On the Richmond Hill line I think I heard it would be Oriole Station.
