GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

^ I wonder if they'll cover the PRESTO machines so people don't accidentally tap?
Metrolinx still wants everyone to tap as usual for ridership statistics and data during the free window. Presto has a free mode thats set across all machines during special events like this:

From the Coors Light announcement:

Just use your PRESTO card or a credit or debit card, including those cards in a mobile wallet to tap on and off as usual. Don’t worry you won’t be charged a fare during the free service window. If you don’t have a PRESTO card or contactless payment card, there is no need to purchase a ticket during the free service window.

Tapping or boarding outside of the free service window, on January 31, 2025, before 9:00 p.m. or after 11:59pm will result in a fare.

Went to Mimico station today and noticed that they are "converting" the street around the station into paid parking. Seems like a very shitty move by the city as the former parking lot closed for development has sat empty for years.
I wonder how many people this will push to drive downtown now as even the proposed rates cost more than a go fare

Actually, it's an improvement over the old regime where on street parking was only legal for 3 hours. There were occasional ticketing blitzes on those back streets. Ever since the free parking lot was shrunk in anticipation of development (before the last developer went broke, that is) there is a solid overflow of daytime commuter parking onto local streets. I wonder if the reserved parking has returned to pre-covid levels, for a while a lot of the reserved signs had been taken down. And after about 2 PM, those reserved spots are a safe bet if you are headed downtown for the evening. .

Service on the Royal York bus is pretty frequent, but it is still awfully convenient to drive and park rather than try to get to GO by transit for the last mile. There's a message in that. GO is still solidly based in the park and ride mentality.

Unless you’re going on a weekend, which case the reserve spots are all free you’re competing with a 30 minute schedule which is easy enough to miss when connecting with the TTC, especially considering long branch is awkward to get to

There are a similar number of “flipped over” reserved spots that are still free to park in but imo for anyone that isn’t commuting it’s a huge downgrade as now you’re paying for a spot to go downtown after work or on a busy weekend (ex the entire cne)

With so many of the lines having no service on the weekend (ex Etobicoke North) I see why people choose to drive

Five dollars to park to go to a sporting event downtown, where the beer costs $12.00, is a great bargain. The parking costs less than a bottle of water at the game.
I am sure there are people who can’t afford an extra $25 a week to commute, but even that is managesble if they pack s lunch one or two days a week. IMHO the constant wails about the cost of parking at GO stations is absurd. But yeah, the last mile aspects need improvement… and 15 minute GO is badly needed.

The cost is similar to the paid TTC lots at Islington or Kipling. So not a big deal.
I disagree, the subway lots are FREE on weekends, and cheaper after 2pm ($2) Both of those distinctions encourage people to get out of their cars to go downtown for sports games/cne etc.
It probably sounds silly but there's a psychological thing that pops up when your parking costs more than the train you're taking.

If you are going downtown to enjoy anything that involves dining, drinking, or tickets purchased through Ticketmaster.....your parking charge is coming out of your spare change. Not even a second thought.

I don't think that I'm the only one that thinks that the Ford government is getting ahead of itself, making plans and promises that it likely will not be able to implement, and anytime soon at that. I really think that they are politically capitalizing on people not knowing how drawn out things would be, how much money this would cost and when these lines would be open to riders.

These are all projects that I firmly do believe are needed, but the amounts of capital that would be needed to pull this off is just ludicrous. Further, negotiating with the freight railroads to build a Missing Link (that both CPKC and CN will use/share) will already cost so much, and take tons of environmental review, red tape, MONEY and assessment.

That being said, I'm curious to see what the estimates are of the government, if these promises are even kept (looking at you, GO in London), what the negotiations are like with CPKC and CN, and if we can see any results in the next two decades lol. Would absolutely love having the Halton unlocked for effective infinite GO service in Brampton and beyond, seeing the Milton Line truly flourish and seeing what can be done with Midtown, but I think having doubts is reasonable.

We still haven't seen the big wins from the meat and potatoes of GO expansion, ie. electrification, expanded service to places like Kitchener, proper double tracking, GO to Bowmanville, true 15 minute service.

What do you guys think?

Here's the underlying press release for the maps above:

Only two new lines are noted in the above text. Mid-Town and Bolton.

Edit to add, here's an enlarged version of the GO 2.0 Map:

Ha! The above shows no Bomanville extension!
