GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Metrolinx says it is setting up a "laydown site" for storing materials where the Richmond Hill line crosses York Mills Road. The notice is labelled under the GO expansion header. I think there is a layover facility planned here? It sounds like construction is starting.

From the notice:

Metrolinx will be setting up a laydown site at 845 York Mills Road. This site will be used to store materials and provide access to the rail corridor. As part of the set up, crews will be conducting various activities such as grading the site with heavy machinery, installing utilities and setting up trailers and barriers. During this time, residents/businesses can expect to see more vehicles traffic in proximity of the site.

I believe this is that layover facility they were planning in the don valley, but decided to move it further north due to yelling from the community

There's been another round of tree/shrub removal since photos from January 2026 and October 2025, and I think also some old poles from the west side of the tracks.

The point of all that heavy timber is that heavy machinery needs a road surface to move up and down the track. That aligns to the work being done at night when trains aren’t running.

Lots of grubbing has just been done along that stretch, TPZ or otherwise.

A reminder of what the Kitchener corridor used to look like, even a couple years after the Georgetown South Project kicked off.

Looks there like not more than 2 active tracks............

But as you remind us how times change............. a look back at roughly this same spot, from an aerial photo from 1960 from the City's archive of same:

Not much vegetative growth there. Lots of active track.

On the West Toronto corridor, the CP side was three tracks - two main lines and a service track up to Dupont - until Parkdale Yard closed. The CN side north of Dundas was two main tracks plus the old TG&B service track which is now the Railpath. South of Dundas, there was a lot of yard trackage to the north. Over the years CP reduced to one track as industries ceased rail service and the Milton line required only one.. The Weston Sub was reduced to 1 track at the start of GTS to expedite construction - GO had already introduced limited 2WAD but it was suspended at the start of GTS, and only returned a decade later.

In the view of the Barrie line where it goes north toward the site of the Bloor-Lansdowne GO station, after the 'grubbing' there's more space on both sides of the existing track than I thought.

I had assumed the new second track would simply go along the east side of the existing one. But supposedly the plan is to eventually have a trail/railpath there, so maybe it will be more complicated?
