GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

I thought They were hoping to bring the speed limit through central Hamilton east of West Harbour to 60mph for the Confederation GO opening? At least that's what I seem to recall..
 
Indeed they did use a #20 turnout here, which is rated for 45mph in the diverging route.

Which is bizarre, as there is a PSO of 30mph for the next several miles both east and west.

I can't think of a technical reason why that PSO has to remain, assuming the right changes in grade crossing protection. I wonder if ML intends to pay for that change.

This would be nice. It sounds like something more readily achievable if we actually built that third track, mind you…

The limit east of Hamilton is 65 mph, maybe that's what it would revert to with the 30 mph restriction lifted. It would be great either way, it's brutal to crawl at 45 km/h all the way across Hamilton.
 
That PSO has been there since steam days and I would speculate is attributable to past days of frequent yard movements in and out of Parkdale Yard, many likely shoving moves - over crossings that in those days were likely unprotected, with Hamilton having sought a whistle ban throughout. One would think that with today's volume of trains, and given the excellent sightlines, some fencing and updated crossing protection would be quite sufficient to allow higher train speeds.

Ward 20 Councillor Kandavel's weekly newsletter advised residents that Warden Ave between Danforth and Clonmore would be closed this weekend for the installation of metal girders between the bridge piers to accommodate the additional track.

I thought this could look interesting from an aerial perspective and @hawc provided me creative drone photo recommendations that I was looking forward to trying out.

However, after getting on site this morning just after sunrise, I realized there were no girders. I should have checked the Metrolinx website where they have rescheduled to an unspecified date in November. :rolleyes:


Anyway....while I was there.....:)

The 30 PSO covers from mile 39 (about Woodward Ave.) to 43.7 (Hamilton) of the Grimsby Sub and mile 36.9 (Bayview) to mile 38.9 (Hamilton) of the Oakville Sub. Some of that is due to curvature, but most of it is due to the way the line is situated at ground level, with frequent level crossings and poor isolation from the neighbourhoods surrounding it. Yes, historically there was a lot of switching through that area which resulted in a lot of train movements (and the potential for incidents due to impatient people trying to cross before it was safe), but that hasn't been nearly the case in the past 30 years or so.

There have been moves to improve the technology at the crossings to future-proof them for any potential speed increases when the time comes to refurbish them, but from within Metrolinx there is no plan whatsoever to ask CN about lifting the PSO or increasing speeds through this section.

On the topic of crossings east of West Harbour, over the past year or so CN has been upgrading many of them (assume MX paid?). This has included replacing crossing gates with the more substantial crossing systems with the overhead boom thingy (sorry I don’t know what they’re called).
