Without reading the details in the RFQ it's hard to tell. In any case, the reality is that expanding parking in the burbs is a necessity. Most GO parking lots are full by 7:30 in the morning. People will not use non-rush hour trains if they can't drive (and park) to the station. It's a fact.

Right but at what point do we recognize the fact a) we're supposed to be increasing transit. and b) people have been clamoring for more offpeak service on no lakeshore lines for years, and have only been given a lintany of excuses as to why not.

I'm with you 100% but it's very difficult to change people's mentality overnight.

My gosh, did you ever listen to that moron in council? He made Rob seem knowledgeable at times. He'd show up, time and time again, not understanding the material in front of him - but he still couldn't keep his mouth shut.

He's not the smart one. He's the one who found god, got sober, and learned not to be too loud about his racist and bigoted views. Not sure there is a smart one ... but perhaps there's still hope for Michael Ford, if he could avoid the path of his drug-addicted mother, and murdering father.

Of course Doug Ford is going to be a nightmare for transit. Anyone who thinks otherwise has their heads very deeply and darkly stuck right up their imagination!

Another thing that is on the drawing board is no longer having free parking at GO lots.

Steve: I take that report with a certain amount of cynicism for a few reasons. Although there is reference in the updated Regional Transportation Plan (the 2018 version of “The Big Move”) to reducing the reliance on parking, this is sprinkled through the report and does not appear as a clarion call to a new way of looking at station access. In particular, Metrolinx is still wrestling with the “last mile problem” that is affected by local development near stations, the quantity of local transit service, and the suitability of a station’s catchment area to shift to a much higher proportion of access other than by the conventional drive/park model. The Globe’s article also notes that while less parking (relative to demand) is a goal, in the short term parking construction will continue.

If GO cuts back on the provision of parking, its expansion will cease to hold the same attraction to its political masters especially those who think only in terms of driving to a station.

Cutting back on parking is one of those noble goals, a potential shift in Metrolinx planning philosophy, but it will always be a future change, not one for today.

Suburbanites are addicted to their cars, no doubt, but the issue isn't just about providing obscene amounts of parking, it's *subsidizing them" to give it away free.

And who *directly* subsidizes it? The passenger who doesn't use it, but pays for it. Just as motorists in general claim "cyclists don't pay for roads", then the mantra fits just as well or better that "motorists don't pay for free GO parking". In the case of the cyclists, they do pay for roads, and help government coffers when using them. Motorists don't as fuel tax only covers part of it.

Great to see actual, wide platforms. Looking forward to this finishing, especially since it is supposed to be continuously raised platforms. The renders don't seem to reflect that though.
 
The difference between current platform height and level boarding height for bilevels is only a foot and a bit, and the rendering is not grossly inaccurate in that respect - wont affect the overall visual impact.

A conspicuous lack of catenary, which will definitely affect the visual impact, however.

We are still expecting electrification, I hope ?
