Correct.
Most likely we will see an EMU train with batteries to bridge the gap. Run on catenary in the Metrolinx portion and charge the battery, then run on battery on the CN track in between.

There is to be 8 track there once they are place with 2 tracks for Barrie Line, 4 tracks for KW and 2 for Milton line. The plan track 3 will become track 1 at Dundas West Station. The current track 1 north of Wallace Bridge was use on opening day of the West Toronto Grade Separation and was removed out of service when track 2 was built that currently connect to Dundas West.^Actually, the fourth track already exists north of the Wallace Ave footbridge, in bits and pieces. It’s just a matter of connecting what’s there with new fill-in bits, once Mount Dennis and Weston stations are finished.
The plans for the section from Wallace Ave eastwards can be found in the Railpath consultations. The railpath is shifted/squeezed, the Bloor station pedestrian tunnels are extended eastwards with new portals, the unused bridge at Bloor is shifted east a touch, and track is laid down to King Street... and again, there is track already laid in bits and pieces. The junction with the Barrie line at Parkdale is removed, and again bits of track are connected with new bits laid here and there, giving the Barrie line its own double track line once the Davenport Overpass is finished.
East of about Brock Ave, the Milton line shifts to a new track, and the existing Milton line becomes the fourth track of the Georgetown line.

If they are expanding tracks here, won't they also need to expand tracks further east after Lakeshore West line merges? Otherwise that will become a choke point. It does not look like ML will need track 1 where the Barrie cut off is until 2024, it will have no impact on the Barrie line until 2023/2024 when the Barrie line will be double track over the new overpass. By then, the 2 Barrie lines will be in place as well track 3 that will become track 1 past the cut off.
One only has to go to Queen to have a look at the corridor to see the plan 8 tracks to be built.
