GO 2.0 Expansion Plan

So, this was just a re-announcement of previous commitments?

I wasn't aware that Ottawa was sharing costs on the Ford-initiated projects ?

- Paul

Yes, there are substantial federal dollars publicly committed to for most or all of those projects.

Hamilton: 1.7B federal money (2021)

Ontario Line: 4B and change, federal money (2021)

Scarborough Subway: 2.2B federal money (2021)

Eglinton West: 1.9B federal money (2021)

Any idea when we might hear more? I’m hoping it isn’t the Kitchener Line Halton work because we already know about that, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

Its not.

LOL, I mostly give up predicting these things when they are at least several months out (just at the announcement stage}, and this gov't mostly delivers things years late.

I don't like being made to look bad. I have a good idea how far along the work is............and it could be announced sooner than not, there's a budget........ but these people rarely start a presser on time, or within 30 minutes of on time, when they pick the time!

There are a small selection of GO projects that would require fulsome coordination. In my order of likeliness:

- Milton Line
- Bolton Line
- Bowmanville Extension (if applicable?)
- Something with the CN acquisition up north (Barrie/Northlander)

(Big gap)

- The freight bypass (and/or…)
- Midtown corridor
- Hamilton anything
- Cambridge-Guelph or Cambridge extension

Curious if you can indicate which of these it may not be. I imagine half of them aren’t even on the governments radar in a meaningful way.

15-minute service to Hamilton Centre would be a great project to me, but probably unlikely. It's a relatively small chunk of line compared to something like Milton or Midtown and on a much lower traffic CP corridor (only a few trains a day), though it's also highly constrained. But also unlike Milton or Midtown, the constrained nature means you would need a higher level of cooperation compared to Bowmanville or Milton where they are basically planning a second, parallel corridor in the same ROW.

If they could get a second track into the GO station I could see it working.

Isn't the Hunter Street tunnel single track and almost 100 years old?
It is indeed currently single track - it's actually wide enough for two tracks though (and from my understanding was double tracked in the past).

The problem is that to fit double-stack containers, the track had to be relocated within the centre of the tunnel to fit within the arched ceiling.

Any double track through the tunnel would either require replacement of the tunnel or lowering of the track bed in order to shift the tracks and create a dedicated freight and passenger track.

Bayview junction is also a major issue, GO service would need a way to cross CN's freight services to get to the Aldershot platforms and dodge the freight weaving at the junction.

It wouldn't be cheap but would unlock service to the second-densest GO station in the network with the second largest walkable employment node as well. Making Hamilton Centre 2-way all day would likely unlock a good bit of counter-direction commuting in addition to the peak hour flows.
