The owner of two Toronto eSports teams is building an arena near the CNE

In an email to NOW, Paulo Senra, OverActive’s head of communications, confirms the report is valid, but emphasizes that the new venue will not be just an eSports arena. It will also be a spot for concerts and other events, with a capacity that is not currently available at other local venues.

“The plan is to build a premium 7,000-10,000 seat sports and entertainment facility – a venue capacity that is not currently available in the Toronto marketplace,” he says.

“This venue will serve as the future home of our two Toronto eSports franchises. This venue will also attract premium concerts, entertainment and corporate and sporting events to the city and the province.”

The venue will be adjacent to BMO Field and Hotel X in the CNE area. According to the ESPN report, OverActive hired Bob Hunter, the vice-president of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (which owns the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors and Toronto FC), to coordinate with government officials on the venue. Hunter has also helped develop other Toronto sports arenas, including Rogers Centre, Scotiabank Arena and BMO Field.

That's a good point too, since this could double as a medium sized venue for things like comedy shows too. Toronto doesn't have many venues of that range.

The Royal York + Scotiabank Arena component is a bit iffier in terms of public safety.

Looking at the schedule, other than practicing before the qualifying rounds there isn't much time to do so. Each team is playing almost every other day. During a normal season you wouldn't really see anything other than morning skates with a schedule like that.

Yes, it could be used for some headline acts during the comedy festival who would have one show at a 6000-seat theatre instead of two at Meridian Hall (the former Sony/O'Keefe Centre). I think the casinos demonstrate the usefulness of a venue of that size. Some of the larger music acts might choose to play multiple nights at a purpose-built entertainment venue instead of one at Scotiabank Arena, without any of the scheduling concerns to avoid hockey and basketball.

I was on BlogTO and saw an article about an esports facility permanently closing because of the pandemic.

I immediately thought of the plans for Exhibition Place and it brings up a good point about the viability of such a facility.

Good thing about e-sports. Unlike physical sports, e-sports can be played remotely with each player having the same top-of-the-line equipment (provided by the sponsors) with strong stable Internet connection (also provided by the sponsors).

Is the Therme proposal a competing one, or in league with all of this? -- with them being the "Indoor/outdoor destination waterpark operator" mentioned in the OPX pdf, with the others more involved in other parts of Ontario Place and Exhibition Place?

Therme... A surprising amount of its firepower was aimed at city hall, politicians, city staff and Exhibition Place officials, none of whom officially have any say in Ontario Place redevelopment. The city does control access points to Ontario Place.

Recommendations​
The Chief Executive Officer, Exhibition Place recommends that:

1. The Board approve of an agreement with Coca-Cola Canada Bottling Limited ("Coke") and Coca-Cola Limited ("CCL") for the installation and maintenance of the Yarwood 1965 Artwork at Exhibition Place on the terms and conditions set out in Appendix A and in the location shown in Appendix B and such other terms and conditions as approved by the Chief Executive Officer and the City Solicitor.​
Summary​
Coca-Cola Canada Bottling Limited ("Coke") and Coca-Cola Limited ("CCL") owner of the artwork known as the "Coca-Cola (Yarwood 1965)" (the "Artwork") wishes to install the Artwork at a location on Exhibition Place grounds as part of its naming arrangement with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment ("MLSE"). The parties have agreed that the Artwork installation area is west of the main entrance into Coca-Cola Coliseum in an established planter.

This report recommends an agreement with both Coke and CCL on the terms and conditions as set out in the report.​
