westwood theatre is all gone now.

Don't remember when the Westwood closed. Too bad the Westwood Theatre closed down before the east entrance to the Kipling Subway station opened in 1980. Went to that theatre after the Kiping Subway extension opened, but the long, long walk to and from was discouraging.

The theatre was in operation until at least 1995. Some of my early dating experiences were at the Westwood around that time.
Shame to see it go, but its fate was sealed long ago.

1955? Would you believe a subway station in that area by 1980 (30 years) and highrises in later years?

after decades of waiting it has begun....

for the next 4 years traffic will be crazy around this area.

where the old "Westwood movie theatre" was located.
they will start here and move out to the roads by the spring.

digging up the parking lot. a new Dundas road will be going through here.

By the time it is over, the bridges will be gone and Bloor will be one
straight road.

Etobicoke is the most suburban part of Toronto. It's no surprise its "city centre" is so underbaked--even as a concept. What is Etobicoke's city centre? Is it the West Mall corridor where its city hall was built at Burnhamthorpe? Is it the Kipling and Dundas area? Bloor and Islington? New Toronto? What Etobicoke needed was a central public space like Mel Lastman Square to help define its city centre. Now it doesn't matter anymore. All its central urban areas can grow into dense, walkable and attractive city neighbourhoods with condo and office development.
