First half of the tenants got occupancy mid-Jan. The rest of us are getting occupancy on Feb 1.

Does anyone know if we are limited to any specific colours of blinds? Any suggestions on a good place to buy blinds?

The condo declaration that was included with the agreement of purchase and sale states (Article IV (c)) "All shades or other window coverings shall be white when visible from the to present a uniform appearance the exterior of the building." It all depends on how strict the future condo board is at enforcing the bylaws. I think there should be a bit of freedom in choosing a neutral solid colour. I think any solid neutral is better than seeing the messy interiors of individual units without coverings.

You might check out Alleen's in College Park (www.alleen.com). I haven't bought there myself, but they have a showroom with a lot of samples and it isn't too far from you. They have an inhouse service too.

Approximately how much should I budget for horizontal pull down blinds to cover the living room and bedroom windows? Bedroom wall is approx 9' tall by 10' wide and living room is approx 9' tall x 11 ' wide. I was thinking about Home Depot as I have some gift cards. Any estimates would be greatly appreciated

my measurements are pretty much the same and I've gotten two ballparks so far. The cheapest was about $3,400 from alleen's however this is for the solar shades in the LR and solar shades plus blackout shades in the bedroom. gulp. i knew the solars were expensive but I didn't think they'd be that much. I'll be getting one more quote before I make a decision.

I called Alleen's for a quick quote on blinds and it turned out to be more expensive than I had originally anticipated (been looking at IKEA too much over the years)
My unit has almost identical dimensions to yours and I was quoted $2300 for both rooms, tax, delivery, and installation included. This is for blackout blinds in the bedroom and solar shades in the living room. The price also includes this "spring assist" feature that I was told was required for longer walls (e.g. the living room).
I'm going to look around for cheaper alternatives so if you find any other solutions I'd love to hear about it too.

Funny, same thing happened to us. Aleen's quoted us on blinds and they looked great, but it was more than we wanted to spend. Ended up ordering them online from http://www.selectblindscanada.ca. I was pretty impressed. First they send you samples of the kind you're interested in, then you do the measuring yourself and put in your order and they ship them. Good customer service. BUT... you need to be very confident with your measuring. They provide detailed instructions which vary from type to type. And if you screw up, well, it's your fault and you're stuck with them.
Loving the look of East, thank you to those posting interior photos. I walk by it almost every day and I think it's a great addition to the neighbourhood, can't wait til they find a tenant for the retail.

Window Shades
We got quotes from Home Depot, Lowe's, and a company that advertises in Costco. We found that big warehouse stores such as Home Depot and Lowe's tend to be the cheapest. They both have a Windows Treatment section where you can view texture and color samples from different brands' sample books and check for measurements and prices. Both stores also do measurements, delivery, and installation for a fee. We didn't feel confident measuring and installing the shades on our own so we went for the "full service", and we were within our budget. With 2 windows, if you are not going for anything fansy your total cost should be way below $2,300.
East windows are bigger than normal window sizes, so we couldn't get anything that's readily available from IKEA or the warehouse stores and had to custom order it.
Anyone experiencing a problem with the ceiling pipes when installing window treatments? Our measurement guy said the pipe in our unit is too close to the window it's pointing to, so we actually cannot install our shades from the top of the window. We have to go a couple inches down. I've never seen it before so I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar problem?

Was viewing the last of the model suites at East lofts a few weeks ago and don't rememember seeing where the garbage chute room was on the floor. Can anyone help me?

There isn't a garbage chute in the building. Residents have to take their garbage and recyclables to the ground floor "Recycling Room", where there is a door to throw garbage into a compactor, and a couple of bins for recycling. Its not super-elegant, but its okay.
I presume it is an initiative (City of Toronto?) to encourage people to recycle more. Bigger buildings probably have tri-sorter chutes to allow recylcables to be thrown down a chute, separate from garbage.
I didn't think I would like escorting my garbage down to the ground floor, in elevators with other residents, but it has turned out to be okay. Now its part of my morning ritual when I go down to pick up my newspaper from the vestibule.
