Durham Region Transit / Pulse

Just thought I'd post a photo of a newly constructed rual Bus stop. This stop is on Reach St. just west of Port Perry. The chain link fence is an interesting asthectic. The fence was built as part of the bus stop, it's not a property line fence.

Wow that’s utter shit. I don’t think that complies with AODA.

At the Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday, DRT presented their 2026 Service Plan. Find it interesting that there's more attention towards extending routes and their operating hours, rather than frequencies/headways.

I'm disappointed not to see at least one route targeted to go to every 15M service mid-day.

That said, I do think the consistent span of service on major routes, as outlined in the slide below is important:

IF you want people to consider transit in lieu of a second or third car, the bare minimum is that it be operating at some level when you need it. So ditching early 'last runs' is good.

I'm less taken by pushing service further in the ex-urbs.

For sure, 2027 needs to focus on frequency.

The service hours on conventional routes were not really conducive for a day and night out in Toronto. On-Demand was a good alternative, but they frequently got all booked up. So I’m glad to see they are running until midnight to accommodate people on later trains.

Agreed, extending service to midnight will help a lot with the last-mile trips. Having said that, so many routes are in-need of more frequent service like the 920. That bus is so packed in the evenings, yet the headways are every 30 mins, and service to Scarborough ends at 10-11pm.

Render looks like they are still going with semi-enclosed shelters with openings around where the doors line up plus wiggle room. The Eglinton and Finch line shelters should have been designed this way. Though the last minute Citadis panic buy might have cocked up their plan for a standard.

Though I am also curious how this will be handled with the varied fleet in Durham and Toronto. The front to rear door distance looks about the same on the 12m Nova and New Flyer bus, but it’s definitely different on the respective manufacturers’ 18m bus.

And the go busses if go transit use the bus way

A reminder what they may look like:
Finally some actual "shelters" for BRT not some half-assed canopy like the crosstown

I have my doubts. I’ve seen enough projects in Durham Region where the final build looks nothing like the renderings... granted, that’s usually at the municipal level. The Pickering waterfront boardwalk is a good example, especially with the Ontario code railings they had to use and all the lack of decent path signage.

These shelters definitely look cold and windy, especially with the prevailing winds, as @Northern Light mentioned much further up thread.

I’m assuming the lip between the road and the shelter is large enough to help, as long as snow clearing is done properly. If the shelters end up being less effective than promised, at least we’ll have an opportunity to give feedback—especially since we’re only getting two stops per direction this year in Ajax, with a few more coming in Pickering.

Well if it’s built property and has adequate frequency, hopefully no one will have to freeze too long waiting inside these shelters (or melt).
