Dufferin Street railway bridge repairs/closure (City of Toronto, near CNE)

If they can go 18 months with this bridge closed, as was mentioned in the Star - maybe they could re-consider and close the bridge to all traffic (including pedestrain) and fast tracking the construction and getting it done before the PanAm Games. It would be cheaper than building a temporary bridge and then building the new permanent bridge to replace the 2.

Access for pedestrians and cyclists is key here. There is no other access point to the area south of the Gardiner/rail line in this area except for an out of the way tunnel at Exhibition GO - a tunnel that does not have the capacity to handle the CNE crowds on its own.

It would be nice to see the TTC run a branch of the 47 down Jameson and Lake Shore into the Exhibition grounds until the new bridge is built. Or a diversion of the 29D + 329 via Springhurst, Jameson and Lake Shore. I don't suppose either is in the cards though.

Running the 47 Lansdowne bus down Jameson Avenue, Lake Shore Blvd. W., and British Columbia Dr. into Exhibition Place to replace the 29 Dufferin road route within Exhibition Place, is an excellent idea. I sent such a comment to the TTC. Others should send the same comment, the more comments the better.

Replacement of Dufferin Street Bridge Over Rail Corridor

Dufferin Bridge has Re-opened to Traffic

Dufferin%20Temporary%20Vehicle%20Bridge%203web_featured_530wide.jpg

The Dufferin Street Bridge has re-opened for vehicular traffic. The new temporary bridge, which is south of Springhurst Avenue and goes over the GO Transit/Metrolinx Rail Corridor, will remain open to traffic until a new permanent bridge is completed in 2019.

A parallel temporary pedestrian bridge remains open on the east side of the vehicle bridge. Cyclists are now expected to use the vehicle bridge, which is marked with "sharrows".

Background

The City of Toronto is replacing the Dufferin Street Bridge over the Metrolinx/GO Transit Rail Corridor as part of a larger project that also includes replacement of the Dufferin Street Gardiner Expressway Underpass. This large project was studied in the Dufferin Street Bridges Environmental Assessment and construction is anticipated to commence in 2016.

As a result of an assessment from our engineering consultants, the City determined that the existing bridge had deteriorated and it was necessary to close the bridge to vehicular traffic for safety reasons in June 2013. It was later demolished in late November 2013. A temporary replacement pedestrian bridge was opened in January 2014 and a temporary vehicle bridge opened in April 2014.

Some good news. From this link:

I hadn't even realised there would be a temporary vehicle bridge. Well that will make driving a bit easier down there. Though the lack of vehicle traffic has made walking a lot easier, without having to worry about the traffic on Dufferin south of Springhurst.

Northbound Strachan closed as soon as Dufferin reopened, so traffic on Dufferin is going to be heavier than usual for the next little while.

Back from the dead is the project to replace the Dufferin bridges over the Gardiner and the Railway corridor.

The City now facing unforeseen urgency to get this done (we'll come back to that) has a report to the Sept 14th Infrastructure and Environment Ctte seeing authority to sole source the contract for engineering and design.
Note that the TTC is seeking to add reconstruction of Dufferin Loop to the work, presumably (one would hope) with turning movements for streetscars in both directions in service of the WWLRT.

Report here: https://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2021/ie/bgrd/backgroundfile-170323.pdf

From said report, a lesson on how government can created needless delays and added costs to project and how Mx can be an obstructive, inconsiderate nuisance. (did we need more examples?, probably not)

Note that I'm skipping bits here, and for the full story, follow the link above to the report!

The reasons for it being a bit of a rush:

The ten (10) year service-life of the temporary bridges installed in 2014, results in a
need for the bridges to be replaced within the next three (3) to four (4) years. Metrolinx's
proposed electrification barriers and equipment cannot be attached to the temporary structures and it is strongly recommended that the bridges be replaced prior to
electrification of the Lakeshore West Rail Corridor

In Summation:

- Mx imposes requirements on the City to change its designs for the bridges to allow for Mx's electrical work. Then fails to provide the technical info required in order to carry that out.

- This results in an initial delay of at least 2 years

- Mx then promises the City it will carry out the work, at its expense as part of the GO Expansion program; this delays work another 2 years.

- Mx then changes its mind and tells the City it will have to do the work, and its own expense, and decides, the original clearances are fine after all, necessitating further design changes.

Do little for 8 years, and then it's a bit of a rush because of the 10-year lifespan of the temporary bridge? Sigh ...

Here's the link to the full item - http://app.toronto.ca/tmmis/viewAgendaItemHistory.do?item=2021.IE24.5

It's not clear to me if the work for TTC includes tracks (or at least allowance for tracks) on the bridges, or if it's just the Dufferin Gate loop.
At least they should make sure the new bridge can support TTC tracks and that there is enough width!

We can thank Rob Ford and company for the delay. Anything infrastructure or transit related was delayed, because he considered it "gravy".

Yes. Streetcar track provision would be very useful, especially if a Waterfront West transit corridor is ever built to connect Queen/King/Roncesvalles to the Ontario Line/Exhibition GO. If built, it would actually create a useful, semi-rapid link to Humber Bay Shores.

The design will be based off the E.A. (if it wasn't, they would be compelled to re-do the E.A.).

The E.A. provides for the following:

We know subsequent to the above, from the new report I linked earlier today.........that the Dufferin Arch will have to be moved.
The clearance heights have changed.
The TTC loop is to be rebuilt at the same time.

The track should be provided for in the TTC Loop and in Dufferin itself; if the rail is to be embedded in the bridge median that should be done at the time of construction, if it will be open on top of a base layer of concrete, the rail can be added later.
The 2.0M bike lane was designed prior to cycle tracks being the norm; I would hope the latter will be provided for.......
