Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

And how will he deal with the political fallout:

"Scarborough, you're getting SmartTrack. It's 2 km east of the planned subway, is billions of dollars cheaper and gets you downtown just as fast, if not faster" - John Tory

many councillors have also switched to the "we made the decision, even though I disagreed, lets just get it done" position as of late too. I feel if there was a vote for it the vote would come out much more in favor of the subway than the original vote in october of 2013.

Besides, There would be serious political fallout from Tory if the plan were to be reversed.

"you voted against scarborough subway, good luck getting on an executive committee of any sort or getting support by me for any of your motions"
John is not vindictive like the Ford's and this will not break him.

Shelley Carroll ‏@Shelley Carroll - NOT!! "@JamesPasternak: Budget Committee set to block "sunk cost" Sheppard LRT East payments to Bombardier and Metrolinx. #topoli #toronto”

James Pasternak @JamesPasternak - @meanderto @shelleycarroll Also, the LRT work on Scarborough LRT can be used for Finch West and the Eglinton Crosstown. No need to pay twice.

Shelley Carroll @shelleycarroll - @JamesPasternak @meanderto No it can't James. We have a thing called Procurement Law and Contractual Obligation. Don't fantasize. #TOpoli

Shelley Carroll @shelleycarroll - @GraphicMatt @JamesPasternak @meanderto James, Matt files everything. Everything. #TOpoli

Seriously. Either Pasternak has lost his mind thinking Metrolinx will walk away from this, or this is a scheme in disguise to revive the LRT.

Think about it. The Master Agreement hasn't been amended yet. If Metrolinx doesn't get their $85 million, they're not going to entertain requests to re-open it. Delay, delay, delay, ah geez, why don't we go and build that LRT now?

Or, Pasternak is looking to become political enemy #1.

I highly recommend seeing this subsequent exchange, it's quite hilarious.

Two articles in the Star.

Scarborough transit timeline

Our neglect of Scarborough RT is shameful: James

Both articles seems to concentrate on the 2006 TTC report that concluded that upgrading the SRT with SkyTrain (MarkII) is the best option. It seems that the Miller Transit City decision has now wasted about 8 years of planning time and costs.

Royson James feels quite strongly that ART/ICTS is the best mode for the corridor. Unfortunately, he is quite wrong but alas, he keeps harping on it from his faux soapbox.

Can't really blame Miller for wanting to upgrade the SRT to an LRT. Not like he could've anticipated this fall-out.

I think many people predicted it. Miller introduced his Transit City plan just after the election and there were many grumbling about it. It was so hated that it helped get Ford elected Mayor. People thought by defeating Ford the grumblings would go away, but even the Province realized that they couldn't fight it anymore and a change to the TC plan was needed.

If Chong had voted against the project in 2013, it would have been within one vote of being defeated

Are these councillors seriously going to use the cancelation fees as an excuse to oppose the project? They were aware of this back in 2013.

What a ridiculous plan to extend Line 4 over Line 2 to Scarborough Centre. The highest capacity transportation option (subway) will take people to North York, and the lower capacity transportation option will take people to the core. That makes no sense at all. Where does Gordon Chong spend his days that he longs for a quicker commute on transit to North York Centre? How about instead building a new subway Line 6 to run from Scarborough Centre to Pickering Town Centre, LRT from Scarborough Centre to Markham Centre, BRT to North York, and regular surface routes to Kennedy. Genius. It seems a lot of councillors don't understand that getting transit converts is about the ease of starting and ending your journey more than anything else. High capacity options should go where loads dictate they should. Faster options should be prioritized where the greatest number benefit. I can accept both a subway and LRT from Kennedy to Scarborough Centre because logically, with Scarborough Centre is the place to grow and the most important transit route out of Scarborough Centre is the one to take people to the core, but if studies show it can be handled by LRT then so be it. But no study is going to say more people will take transit between SCC and Fairview versus people going between SCC and Kennedy. So if there is no need for subway between Kennedy and SCC then really logically there is no need for subway in Scarborough.

Chong hasn't been a councillor since the year 2000

Let's not rewrite history. Why were polls showing that David Miller would've easily won if he ran then?
