Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Edit: also why not sell each station and all its building costs to the land developer for future stations that are projected to be adjacent to hubs. (who owns STC anyways?) As crappy as seeing that ghastly penguin logo on the VMC sign it may actually be a viable option to save some money.

Because no developer will spent half a billion developing a subway station and condo complex at Lawrence and McCowan, when they could build literally anywhere else in Toronto.

Actions speak louder than words. Smarttrack was a sham that both the Provincal Liberals and moreso Tory have to own. They campaigned strongly on a Scarborough subway and neutered it together. That is not a strong voice.

The only thing that neutered the SSE was it going over its $3.56 Billion budget.

The "one stop" in parallel with the rising cost. Smarttrack has ruined any chance of parts of it being above ground for now at least. The latest SLRT cost is not far behind and there is now concern over the RT structure. But without scrutiny like we've seen with the subway this type of change would have just been an "oops" moment and just paid out as an over run during construction i

If this thing is doomed to go ahead, as I suspect it may be, then the Lawrence stop needs to be built - deep mining or not - and Smarttrack killed.

Or...

Murray. Subway. Alignment.

Best of both worlds.

Lawrence East keeps its stop, maybe Ellesmere does too, STC in the same locations saving hundreds of millions from not rebuilding the terminal, whatever cost savings are left over gets us another 1-5 extra stations east. No need for GO stations at Lawrence nor Ellesmere as it duplicates service and GO is supposed to be limited stopping after all.

Then we can close the Bloor-Danforth eastern expansion file forever.

Square One/Dixie is next after this...

The TTC's latest estimate, which assumed that construction didn't start until Crosstown was completed, which was a major factor in the inflated costs. When questioned on it, they admitted that there was nothing preventing construction from starting sooner.
You mean the estimate that was produced at the request of "someone" but the TTC CEO can't remember who? Well, nothing to worry about there then.

What's your theory as to why that station sank without trace, if it's such a great idea?

I'm pretty sure Ellesmere Stn was axed because it's presently the least used station in the system and the need to start the curvature to get into the east-west SRT alignment has to start south of the existing station. But that doesn't mean - especially after the loss of Midland Station that Ellesmere's numbers couldn't improve. The lack of connection to every passing York Mills bus, like at Lawrence East, is the biggest drawback to numbers.

My original question wasn't clear. Ellesmere was among the least of the Murray alignment issues.
  • The principal one was having to build an entirely new subway station at Kennedy (to avoid the need to bend the line back from Eglinton and then cut into the existing alignment to migrate the line over to the SRT alignment. In addition to the SRT being down, this now took Line 2 down between Kennedy and Warden so that the new stretch could undergo track and power work and then commissioning/testing.
  • As a secondary issue, this would involve all design costs at Kennedy being thrown away and an entirely new terminus for Crosstown having to be designed.
  • Getting any future Crosstown East line off Eglinton and into a NW-SE aligned station would likely be interesting also.
