Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

The critical mass will happen and it will be chaos. What are they going to do? Arrest cyclists for being on the road?
Where else are they supposed to go?
Some of the groups are already organizing. I think there was a ride yesterday and one more next week.
How many are we actually talking about? I doubt the casual bikeshare-r will show up.

I don't think it's far fetched that we'd see rides with turnout similar in size to the ghost ride and gathering on August 1st at Bloor & Avenue Rd.

What percentage of riders use Bikeshare? I think there was quite a decent amount, and it's a lot easier to commute in and use Bikeshare. A bigger group means you should draw people in from further away.

Bikeshare alone is expected to hit over 6 million rides in Toronto this year. In terms of percentage of overall cycle rides I'm not sure where or how to get that. I would imagine privately owned bike rides still make up the bulk share.
 
I think that Bikeshare has over 300,000 members now. Of course, only a tiny fraction will be using the service every day, but for comparison, in the 2021 census only 15,000 Torontonians said their main mode of commuting was by bicycle (of course, conversely, there will be much larger number who occasionally commute by bicycle) .

The other point is that half of all bikeshare trips take place on Bloor-Danforth and Yonge, so the impact of Bikeshare is particularly concentrated. Anecdotally, whenever I'm on those streets it seem like a non-trivial fraction of bikes.

Correction: half of all e-bike bikeshare trips take place on Bloor-Danforth and Yonge. Important distinction to make as they are only a small fraction of the total bikeshare trips, and are likely used by a very different demographic than the bikeshare ridership as a whole.

It's worth mentioning that commuting only tells part of the story. Things like running errands and general getting from A to B are probably the majority of trips. I for one never commute to work on a bike but I am a regular Bikeshare user.
 
Guess what's going to happen if this idiocy comes to pass? Cyclists will, and should, ride in the middle of the curb lane out of spite. I know I would. Eat my booty shorts, drivers!! 🤣
You can bet that I will be. I'm thinking of getting a shirt/sign made with "don't like me using this lane? Tell DoFo to bring back bike lanes!", with his phone number on it

Of course we cycle on the road, where we always were before bike lanes. As a mid-50s cyclist who began riding in the 1970s the very idea of dedicated bike lanes is still novel.
