Church-Wellesley Village

The Red Lion isn't coming back (good riddance). New signs up advertising the Blake House coming soon.

Oh, there is.

I'm really not sure you'd like to go there though.

In fact, I'm quite certain you wouldn't.

Though, come to think of it....."club setting" might be open to interpretation in this case.

are you talking about the comfort zone?? if so yes, it's not for the faint of heart clubbers, lol

there are no clubs in the city that "strictly" play techno...most clubs play dance/top40/progressive type stuff....some venues bring in different genres of music from week to week(footwork is good for this)

the guvernment is good for their "all access" events because they have different sounds in 7 different areas

as far as ever hearing techno in a gay bar, don't hold your breath...not many techno dj's do britney or cher remixes :p

the one good thing about going outside of the village for better music is that you actually run into a new refreshing crowd of gay guys that rarely step foot in gayville....yes, they do exist ;)

regardless of the future of the village it certainly was busy last night...

line ups outside of woodys,byzantium,buddies,play,etc

zippers was very busy and i popped into the barn but there was a huge line trying to get upstairs so i left

statlers is still closed :(

The crowd at the Barn has really shifted in the past few months. It's a lot younger and twinkier. I guess it's a combination of Crews' closing and the college night crowd spilling over into the weekends. It's not really my scene, but at least it's busy now, and they are now making use of the ground floor too. In the summer there were a couple of Saturdays I went when there were fewer than two dozen people in the whole place.

Oh man, I was so not thinking of the Comfort Zone.

More like The Basement.

I've never heard techno at Footwork.....they usually have House, Breaks, and Jungle nights there.

And to bring this thread back to what it should be about: I fourth the endorsement of Hair of the Dog. I've only been there twice and not in the last year but that place sure is memorable as being just the right place for me.

ya, barn was dying a slow death for a while....only wednesdays were busy...then they brought in new promoters and tapped into the younger "queen street" crowd to try something different and so far it's worked...good for them

whether guys go to the barn or not it's important to have as many places going as possible....in another site i post on there was discussion of circa going into bankruptcy and people were posting that they hoped it died because they didn't like it or they didn't go there...people fail to realize that competition is good and the more places open the better chance your favorite bar is going to have to be at the top of it's game to keep your business

and speaking of places trying to stay open....has anyone been to remingtons in the last month or so since they've gone "dutch" :p

just wondering if it's working or not

My ex and I had our 10th anniversary party upstairs there and they made such a big fuss over us which was extra nice and made for such a memorable evening.

That's kind of a sad memory! :(

I fully agree with the consensus about HoTD. It has just the right atmosphere inside. The low lighting and half underground location give the main floor a very intimate feel, the upstairs is so great for parties and the patio is fantastic in the summer. The staff is friendly and usually on the ball. They make a few blunders, but fewer than average from my experience. As for the food, they are a step above the other pubs in the village who just deep fry whatever is delivered by the Sysco truck. I love the smoked chicken penne, their pub breakfast, and of course, the 'pita chip' nachos!

statlers closed for good....

from their web site...

Dear Friends....

We would like to Thank You Statlers Family... friends, patrons and artist that have supported us. Due to circumstances beyond our control...we’ve been forced to shut our doors.
We’ve given it our best in re-opening the doors...but for now...we are afraid that Statlers doors will remain shut.
Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused to anyone.
We love you and miss you and wish you the best for the holiday season.
Life is a cabaret...with all it’s up and downs...that’s just life.
Thank you once again, for your love and support...

Guu is opening at Church and Granby soon (a little outside "The Village" proper I know.)
It is a Japanese restaurant exported from Vancouver.
This place is apparently a big deal to Japanese cuisine aficionados.

UPDATE: The exterior renovations are done. They did a fantastic job too! What a transformation from a dreary strip plaza to a chic looking restaurant. Sorry no pictures but I'm sure someone will post soon. I suspect this place will be a destination.

well this looks "interesting"...still trying to decide if this should be looked at as an actual bar or just a tease to draw guys into their bathhouse....

Walking home tonight I noticed that there is activity inside the former Church Street diner. I could see new drywall on the ceiling and what appeared to be an electrician inside on a ladder from the sidewalk. So we've lost a few good restaurants in the past couple of months but it looks like we are about to regain this spot once again after a 14 or so month absence.
