Best Burger

Islington City-Centre & Etobicoke are the mecca of Gourmet Burger joints.

Here are my top favorites in that area.

1. Magoo's
2. Woody's
3. Gourmet Burger
4. Royal Meats
5. South St. Burgers
6. ACME
7. Apache
 
Was near Yonge/YorkMills on Tuesday and had a chance to check out all the hype surrounding Priest Burgers. Place was pretty busy even at 2:30pm. Couldn't exactly hear what "The Priest" actually had in it so I went for a double cheeseburger. Although it was busy, we got the burgers pretty quickly and I'd say that they are very very good.

I wouldn't call Apache a gourmet burger restaurant. It's more of an old school burger restaurant. These gourmet places are more like W Burger Bar and GBC and Big Smoke.
 
The best hamburger that I have ever tasted in this city is from Food Cabbie - being served out of a trailer in the parking lot at Queen and Dalhousie. I have not tasted Burger Priest yet - but some people are calling this burger better than the priest!! Food Cabbie is run by a Chef from Napa Valley. The Burgers are from freshly ground beef and are made to order - if you like your burger rare - no problem! You can't beat the price either -$5.75 for a Cheeseburger and this INCLUDES tax!

If you want to check out this burger I suggest that you don't delay. The City has issued them an eviction order and by the end of this month they are being told they must vacate the parking or else! :mad: The city is intent on banishing ALL food trucks from downtown (also notice how hot dog stands are disappearing? :confused:) so that we are forced to buy overpriced crap from stationary restaurants. :mad:

The Food Cabbie isn't just about burgers - they offer other American classics such as the Philly Cheesesteak and Chicago Dawgs and Steak Hoagie Haystack pictured below (all prices INCLUDE taxes ! ) :)

I like the variety at Yellow Griffin but the last couple of burgers I've gotten there have been overdone. Most of their topping combinations just sound like excuses to pile a bunch of disparate stuff on a burger with no mind to the overall taste. Contrast with, say, the Boom burger at Woody's or the Butter Burger at Stockyards and they're miles apart. Even though both of those burgers have a ton of stuff on them, you can taste every individual element and they all work together.
 
I had the same experience last time I was at Yellow Griffin (overcooked, not good).

I also agree with Food Cabbie: a great burger. Not 'gourmet' (whatever that even means), but very tasty and they cook it to order. I think they might have fixed their licensing issue as well...let's hope that they're around for a long time.
 
Burger Priest is my favorite, there's also a new location on Yonge which I haven't tried yet.

BQM on Ossington is also decent.

Apache and South St. don't make my list.
 
There's yet another burger's priest opening at queen and bathurst. on bathurst, just south of queen east side of street.
 
I ate at No Bull Burger on Parliament, just north of Queen today. It was pretty good. Cooked nicely medium rare and the price was right. I think they are owned by the same people who own the souvlaki shop immediately to the south in the same building which I have not tried.
 
Im personally a fan of priest. I relatively close to the new yonge location. My only complaint is the blatant religious undertones. Everything on the secret menu has a christianity themed name, the name of the restaurant, the wooden menu on the wall even has a cross on it, and they are closed sundays for "church". being the hardcore athiest i am, that causes a bitter aftertaste. Although religion makes me sick to my stomach, I put my morals aside for a juicy delicious burger Word to the wise, if you are trying priest for the first time I recommend a plain cheeseburger with no toppings. dont get a double (processed cheese between 2 patties always turns to martian slime, no matter where you go), dont get bacon dont get anything. condiments are for when you have to eat at hero.

I am not a religious person either but the christian undertones of the Burger Priest restaurant doesn't really bother me because the owner couldn't be more up front about it. Same with some other famous fast-food restaurants which have christian undertones such as In-n-out burger which has bible verses printed on paper containers and Chik-fil-A restaurants which are closed on Sunday.

What I do not like and find completely unacceptable is the growing practice of certain fast food chains serving HALAL meat without warning their patrons! :mad:

For example, I did not know until very recently, that the HERO Certified Burger chains serves ONLY HALAL meat!

There are no signs inside the store warning patrons and yet on their website you will find this! http://www.heroburgers.com/pdf/Heritage-Angus-Beef-halal.pdf

Now you know why you can't get bacon as a topping at Hero!

Now you know what "Certified" stands for!

Their beef is certified by the Islamic Society of North America "ISNA" - an organization that promotes wahhabism in North America ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Society_of_North_America#Allegations_of_Wahhabism

How much do they pay ISNA to certify their meat? This cost is passed on to customers as a form of religious tax or in this case a form of "Jizya" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jizya

For those who don't know about HALAL it involves inhumane slaughter practices (animals are not stunned beforehand) and discriminatory hiring practices inside the slaughterhouses as non-Muslims are not allowed to be involved in the slaughter process (hard to believe this is allowed in Canada!).

I refuse to knowingly eat HALAL meat and I suspect I am not alone!

What is amazing to me is the fact that we have a HERO Burger at the corner of Church & Wellesley! Right at the very epicenter of Gay Canada is a sharia compliant restaurant! And it is not the only one! If a review in NOW magazine is to be believed (see link below) - the ACME Burger chain is also all-HALAL ! And then of course there are the various mid-east wrap places serving HALAL meat so if you are looking for a snack in the Gay village it is hard to find something that isn't sharia-compliant!

Hands down and I do mean hands down The Burger's Priest has the best burgers in Toronto. If you haven't been there then you're missing out big time.

Firstly Halal meat is same as Kosher meat, just one done by muslims and the other by Jews. You feel similarly about Kosher meat? You have implied that stunning an animal is more humane that slaughtering them. The jury is still out on that. http://www.jpost.com/JewishWorld/JewishNews/Article.aspx?id=255038

And what is sharia compliant? Its sharia compliant not to steal, its sharia compliant not to kill innocent people, its sharia compliant to not lie, back-bite, or be greedy. Its sharia compliant to do for others what you would want for yourself. Are you against all of these sharia compliant things or just the peace about humanely slaugtering animals?
